Marokopa is a strong community with
many historical family links and with many residents being
third generations in some families.

Box: There is a
privately owned phone for public use by travellers and
holidaymakers to use, which is coin operated. It is
maintained and kept in working order by the owner.

Mitchell is the designated First Aid Person and her
residence has a sign outside showing that it is the first

Mitchell is also the co-ordinator for this service when
there is an emergency and it is called for.
Fire: The contact for this is the Camping Ground
and Store ph.8767444 and there are volunteers who are called
on to assist when needed. There is a fire station with
firemen on call at Taharoa which is about 30 mins drive from
Marokopa.
Search and
Rescue: Mrs Ailsa
Mitchell is the co-ordinator in conjunction with the police
when searches are needed along the coastal region. Private
land owners are organised to search their stretch of the
coastline in an emergency.
Civil
Defence: Mrs Ailsa
Mitchell is the co-ordinator of this service in conjunction
with the Waitomo District Council. There are Civil Defence
posts at the Piripiri School and the Sports and Recreation
Ground.
Neighbourhood
Watch/Support: Mrs
Mitchell is also the co-ordinator in charge of the Marokopa
Neighbourhood Watch Service.
Marokopa Village
Committee: This was
set up to look after the concerns of the community and the
residents in the community.
Community organised
activities/fundraisers:
Fishing
Competition: organised
yearly in the middle of January by the Piri Piri School in
conjunction with the community. The contact person is Cheryl

Trail Bike
Ride: yearly on Easter weekend. Organised by the
Sports Club to fundraise for the building of new facilities.
This is a popular attraction at Easter with a big influx of
people coming into Marokopa for the two day event.
Marokopa Sports
Day: This day is
organised and run by the Sports Club around the 10th January
yearly and attracts many competitiors from outside the area/
Events are organised from early morning through to the
afternoon and these include: King of the Mountain,
woodchopping, athletics, equestian and many other fun
activities. There are events for all ages, from children

Beach to Bar Fun
Run:organised yearly at
the beginning of February by a well established stock broker
and the Te Anga Tavern, this event is well supported by
locals and residents from nearby towns and communities. Spot
Prizes are awarded and all age groups are encouraged to

Coast Recreation and Sports
Club: Rugby is played
regularly throught the season with the team consisting of
members from Kinohaku, Te Waitere, Taharoa and Marokopa.
The Coast Rugby Football Club take on all the juniors from
the small communities who want to play sport and organise
uniforms, fees and transport if needed. These sports
include rugby, soccer and netball.
