The Marokopa Marae is on the other side of the river and is only accessible by boat. There are many functions held at this Marae by the local Iwi and all the supplies and Whanau are taken across on the boat. The building on the left is the miromiro e te po (dining room) and the building on the right is the miro miro awatea (sleeping house).

As well as the sand dunes there are many areas along the coastal shoreline that are sacred to the Maori of Marokopa and they are cordoned off and there are signs up advising people where they are. The public are asked to be considerate and respect the wishes of the Maori community when approaching these areas.
