CERTAMEN PRELIMINARIES This year Massachusetts annual Certamen Prelinminaries will be held at Quabbin Regional High School on Saturday, April 5th 2003. Like every year teams will be competing and the top three schools of each level will continue and compete at the finals at the State Convention (May 16th-17th). However, those intending on going to nationals will then on this same day be competing for their spot on the team representing Massachusetts at Nationals this summer. This new process will allow a variation of people from different schools being on the national team and it would create a fierce team for everyone to face at nationals. The rules for advancing into the Finals at the State Convention are as follows: ADVANCING TO THE FINALS The three teams in each division with the highest cumulative points after the three rounds of contest will be declared finalists and will advance to the Certamen finals at the MJCL State Convention. In the event of a tie involving one or more of the top three teams, those teams involved in the tie will contest a tie-breaking round of four toss-up questions without boni questions. The toss-up question categories will be distributed consistent with the preliminary rounds. If the tie-breaking round results in another tie, tie-breaking rounds will continue as long as necessary.
