The Immigration Story

Alexander McNab, Peter and Jane’s oldest child emigrated to Australia in 1898.

The rest of the McNab family emigrated mainly in 1919 and 1920. The actual reason for it is not known. Perhaps, they were not satisfied with the conditions or wages of the coal mining industry in Scotland, or they were just looking for increased opportunities.

Their move seems to be centered on a man named Thomas Landsborough. He is referred to as "their uncle" by Elizabeth and Margaret McNab when they came to America in 1919.

Landsborough was born in Scotland about 1855. He married one of Jane McDonald's half sisters, Margaret McKee. According to the 1920 US Census he came to America in 1880 and became a naturalized American citizen on May 10, 1894.

Sometime prior to 1913, Thomas Landsborough made a trip to Scotland. We assume he discussed coal mining work in America, as Hugh Mills, husband of Jean McNab, made a trip to see a Thos. Campbell c/o Jas. Beattie Brisbane Coal Co. in Houtzdale, PA. shortly thereafter. It is not known how long Hugh stayed in Pennsylvania or whether or not he came to work there, but he did return to Scotland. More than likely, the start of World War I disrupted their immediate plans.

When Elizabeth and Margaret McNab arrived at Ellis Island on March 31, 1919 they indicated they were going to stay with their uncle and they listed their father, Peter McNab, as their nearest relative in the country from whence they came. He was living at 119 Queen Street in Dumfries, Scotland at the time.

On February 4, 1920, Agnes McNab landed at Ellis Island with her four children. Her husband, James Sanderson, did not accompany them. Agnes listed her sister Jean as her nearest relative in Scotland and indicated she was going to stay with another sister, Marion, at Thomas Landsborough's address in Scranton, PA. We have been unable to find any information on how or when Marion arrived in Scranton.

The family of Mary McNab came to Ellis Island on May 15, 1920 on the same ship as the Mills family. John Brown, Mary's husband, was listed as an Internal Grinder. We believe this occupation had something to do with coal mining too.
Both families indicated they were going to stay with their mother, Jane McDonald McNab at 188 Denver Ave. in Bridgeport, CT. We were unable to locate any information on how or when she arrived in Bridgeport or whether or not her husband, Peter, was with her.

On September 6, 1920, James Sanderson arrived at Ellis Island. He indicated he was going to stay with his wife, Agnes, at 121 Middle St., Bridgeport, CT. This means sometime between May and September Agnes moved from Scranton to Bridgeport, if she did, in fact, go to Scranton from Ellis Island.

Sometime in the early 1920’s, most of the family moved to Kearny, NJ. The Sandersons stayed in Bridgeport, while the single girls, Elizabeth, Marion and Margaret, the Mills family and the McNab parents moved to a house at 336 Forest Street in Kearny. We believe Hugh Mills returned to Scotland some time after and died there. The Brown family also moved to Kearny, but to a different address.

John McNab, the youngest of the family, worked his way to America. He arrived on February 13, 1922 aboard the SS Fort Hamilton. He was working as an Asst. Stewart when the ship arrived from Bermuda. He probably rejoined the family in Kearny, NJ
