This has been the hardest thing that I have ever been
challenged with. Living with MCS is a very difficult thing to
do. Life has for me taken on a whole new meaning. MCS is a
very challenging illness. So many of the variables that make you sick
will be out of your control. The key to remember I think is to put
as many of they variables under your own control as possible.
- Limiting your exposures is absolutely
crucial. This in my opinion is one of the most difficult
things that you will encounter. It is considerably
easier if you do not work. Working with MCS has a whole set of
problems in itself. If you are fortunate
enough to not have to work. Then I would suggest that you take
a good look at your surroundings. Where are they located? What
is nearby? What materials is your environment made of and
prominent there? What types of products do you have in
your home and car?
- If you must relocate be very careful in your
choices. Bad choices would be near any manufacturing
companies. A highly populated and polluted city etc. A great resource for locating possible problems
with the environment and giving you all sorts of wonderful
information in which to help you make your choice is Scorecard.org
If you are staying where you are. Then you must Really
look at your surroundings. You must get educated about the
products around you and what chemicals they
contain. You must educate yourself about the dangers in
the choices you probably have been making for years.
These are everyday things like what shampoo, conditioner and soap
you and your family use. Cosmetic choices. I had a hard
time with this one in particular. I did find however there are
some really nice beauty products out there that we can choose.
Don't expect that they will be sold in Department stores
however. For a listing of some of the products that I have
used and tested personally please visit my page Tolerated
or NOT.
- I felt absolutely lost until I knew what I
had. As with all the people that I have met and corresponded
with. We have all pretty much become sick over a period
of time. It was not an immediate thing. Little by little
we had more and more symptoms. For me I started with the headaches
that I got every day. I though this was a normal thing to
happen if you had allergies and sinus trouble. For me I had
found that one particular over the counter medicine helped me combat
the headaches and congestion with no side affects. I would
take this medicine usually every day. Then at one
point the medicine was not helping anymore. I went to the
Doctor and they tried other things for a period of time- no
relief. They also wanted me to try and pinpoint if I was
coming in contact with something that may be triggering these
headaches. For me I found the cause of the headaches.
But when I explained the cause the Doctor's really started shaking
their heads. Well as more time went on the list of symptoms,
the frequency of trouble and severity increased. I was
ignorant to MCS. But what was about to happen would change my
life forever. All of a sudden I started having problems with
more and more things. Like Pine type cleaners and
bleach. I also had troubles going into shoe
stores. I would notice strong smells coming from the
drains in the apartment I was staying in temporarily. I
started having real severe piercing headaches when I would go to the
mall and now when I come in contact with perfumes and colognes.
It is now very apparent that it is MCS. I react to all of the
chemicals now. car/bus exhaust, perfumes, air
fresheners, paints and building products, hairsprays and scented
personal care items, plastics, gasoline, propane, natural gas, ...on
and on.
- I have been educating myself and that is a very
important thing to do when you suffer or suspect you suffer from
MCS. You MUST read product labels!
You also
must learn what chemicals are in the products that you are reacting
to. Then you MUST try and limit if not completely stop your
exposure to these chemicals and products. In allot of cases I
know this is much easier to say than to do. I have found
several books that are really good resources for looking up products
and also chemicals. One really good book that is a good
starter for MCS is by Pamela Reed Gibson, PH.D, Titled Multiple
Chemical Sensitivity- A Survival Guide. I found this book to
be very good for the people who is new to MCS or someone who is
thinking this may be them. Dr. Gibson includes many things
that can affect your health whether you are an MCS sufferer or
not.
