Songwriting

Songwriting is what really motivated me to learn the guitar. For years I used to make up songs in my head but I didn't know how to play any instruments or musical score so I could never write them down. So after borrowing an old Spanish acoustic for a few years I finally bought an electronic tuner and found a great free internet guitar tutor online at www.songplayer.com.

I really did learn to play my first song using the songplayer tutor. After I learned to play one song I started looking on the internet for other guitar sites and I started to learn a bit more about guitars as well as how to play them.

Then I bought a standard electric guitar, the Yamaha Pacifica 112, which I still have all these months later. A great guitar for a beginner. It's easy to play, hold it's tune for ridiculously long periods of time and play and sounds pretty good too! I also bought a little practice amp and started to play some rock guitar to myself.

After I got better on the electric and the Spanish acoustic I knew that this wasn't going to be a passing fad in my life. I was keen, I knew I would play this thing and continue to enjoy it for years to come, hopefully. So I went out and bought a great acoustic by Ovation called a Celebrity.

Ovation guitars aren't everyone's first choice because some people are put off by the fact that they are not an all wood construction. The back of the guitar is bowl/dome shaped and is made of plastic type material called lycrachord.

I can see some purists will think "if it ain't all wood, then it ain't all good" but they might be wrong. I am so pleased with this guitar and I love the sweet sound it produces. Just perfect for recording when songwriting.

The lycrachord back is strong and light which means that the guitar can be held for a long time without feeling heavy. Also it's standard battery powered output with 3 band equalizer is reputed to be the best in it's class.

But what do I know, I am not a guitar maker, I just know that it sounds, looks and feel good.
