Slavery still exists*This thought provoking news item was published in the Daily Khyber Mail, Peshawar on March 22,1987 Swabi (From our Staff Reporter) Slavery still sexists in NWFP and a welfare organization is busy to get the slaves free after paying compensation to their masters. According to a press release of Azad Dehqan Tehrik (Free Peasants Movement) issued here on Saturday, about 23 persons were living in the slavery bondage only in the Dobian village in Tehsil Swabi district Mardan. The Press release added that the Tehrik freed another peasant slave Chamnay son of Rahimdin of Village Dobian on Saturday after paying Rs. 9,000 to his master Wahid Jamal. The Tehrik had sanctioned Rs. 5,000 for the freedom of slaves from its fund, but faced a shortfall of Rs. 4,000 when Chimney's master demanded Rs. 9,000 for his freedom. A middle class mad of Kaka Khel, who asked not to be named, provided the remaining sum, which was later paid to Wahid Jamal and peasant got freedom for the yoke of his slavery.
