Soviet Phobia not justified*Letter to the Editor Sir, This is with reference to your editorial "solutions ahead" dated January 26,1988 read with the article "Afghan struggle for independence" by Mir Abdul Aziz. To me the call of the hour and sign of the time for Pakistan is to consider Soviet Union a state within the frame of international comity of nations without falling prey to any sort of 'soviet phobia'. This way confidence and trust would help influence the pace of development positively. Pakistani diplomacy should be forwarding its own interests at all costs without compromising on its basic ideology. However sadly during the past decade of time we have witnessed that vested interest groups have tossed new fears, ifs and buts on the present world order and as such have tried to hijack Pakistan to a particular end. But such attitude has never earned us a good name or a better future. Through such tactics Pakistan has ended into a closed avenue with a huge burden of borrowed money while its know how on contemporary technologies has not improved to the international standards. Amid such a depressed economy Pakistan has reportedly paid Rs. 2millions to the Afghan mujahideen which is by all means a further burden on our economy. To me instead such amount could be utilized elsewhere say in Kashmir or India or the Palestine refugees camps. All these measures speak of an unjustified soviet phobia amongst the ranks of our government, which is by no mean a good omen. Such gestures will blame us anti soviet, which means the negative consequence for our future. Here it will not be out of place to recall about the 1971era when our adamant attitude towards the neighbouring big power left us mourning for the eastern part of our country. Hope writers, editors and all people of intelligence will take into consideration such facts and figures before airing any emotional issue.
