Dreamland- Oh these loudspeakers !Last year when I returned to Toronto from Pakistan after a decade of time I was surprised to find that the lay man impression of a Muslim in the my city of Toronto has changing considerably. Two decades early every second Pakistani in this city used to be known as a doctor, engineer, pharmacy man, university professor and so. But now the statistical occurrence of such a professional persons has dropped to one in hundreds. How come this retardation occurred? I have been constantly wondering on this dilemma. Canada is the country known for its professional personnel and has always encouraged the new comers to go for perfection. Frankly speaking hundreds of Pakistanis have improved their educational and other standards after their arrival into this land of abundance and opportunity But now our new comers to Canada would hardly care for any long term planning regarding up gradation of their status and qualifications. Instead they would search for some abrupt means and ways to earn. Canadian dollars. Is this because we have let substandard people to immigrate to this land? I don't believe this because the Immigration rules and requirements have never been lowered. So, then such a fussy behavior must be the cause of present privatization move around the globe where under every person is trying his luck for a quick fortune making. I am confident on the influences of this very axiom. But still again rules of the game are never waived off by any civilized government in the contemporary village world and as such if one is making e-business or selling on Gerald Street has to observe the regulations and laws. On every weekend when I visit Gerald Street_ a mini Indo Pak community centre in Toronto I am amazed to see the business activities in full swing. And truly many businessmen and women having successfully resorted to the same old tricks that they used to play for help booming their business back home. Yes, for example invading the entire foot path in front of ones store and shop. This is done with the same zeal and spirit that Pakistanis or Indians would dare to invade each other back home. Still some of them would play loudly their religious songs and holly recitations right on the very road. Finding such an Islamic jazba in offing in Toronto recalled me Sunehri mosque of Lahore where on each minarets the true believers have hanged no less than 24 laud speakers of extra ordinary powers. Through these around the clock religious sermons and speeches are broadcasted. And interestingly if you dare to peep into the mosque you will be surprise to find it empty of any worshipers. Just a tape recorder is attached to these speakers and which contentedly bless the people of the locality. Finding it a municipal nuisance a Lahorite Lawyer could brave himself to lodge a complaint with the Lahore High Court for a remedy. And when the court in its verdict ordered the law enforcement authorities to ensure that the broadcast from the mosque be limited to the premises of the mosque and not into the outer space, all of the believers turned enraged. Today, finding our immigrants from Islamic world following the very tactics for airing their beliefs even on the Gerald street make one wonder if this is what we are contributing to the future of Canada, our dreamland? For me it is thought provoking incident as with respect to the future of multi-culturalism in this country. If the Charter of Rights is revoked by all such people and as such Muslims are allowed to play the nuisance through loud speakers in streets and residential areas, Sikhs are given the rights to keep their Kirpans and Hindus ask to practice Sati, then a search for some new and more effective charter of Rights ought to be unleashed so that the dignity, security and worth of Human persons is safeguarded and ensured...
