Failure of the leadership class in Pakistan and the Armed forces
Historically on each occasion of takeover in Pakistan, military has come with almost identical reasons for its extra ordinary act. And on every occasion the country's Supreme Court has upheld the move declaring the military government as de jure. To many scholars such in timely actions by the country's armed forces has been heroic. No doubt on each such occasion disbanding political activities and the public leadership for some time allowed the rulers to redefine the national economic strategy and thus ensuring a boom in all walks of life. However in no case the armed forces has ever wished to stay once for all in power and therefore sooner or later it has given up in favour of the elected representatives of the masses to take over the burden of governance. Sadly on every occasion of the governance by the people, by the people and for the people has ended on the failure of the leadership class. This can be imagined from the very recent statistical figures that find the present military government of Gen. Pervez Musharraf having successfully raised the national reserves in the State Bank of Pakistan from an amount of Rs 200 million that the last civilian government had left behind to Rs 7000 Billion. Interestingly on every occasion of the restoration of democracy in Pakistan the leadership class has assured the public that no more military rule would ever return in future. And that always a bad democratic government was far better than a good dictatorship. All these facts and figures serve us with a corollary that would show alternate governance by the civilian and military governments. And that on each occasion of civilian rule the public exchequer is targeted to a cruel and inhuman loot and plunder. And with the civilian rule we can find Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto, two extreme of our political spectrum becoming Prime Minister one after the other. Does it mean that all the politicians hailing from the upper social class of our society, irrespective of their ideological orientations, are not only corrupted but power hungry too? Many fans of the Pakistan armed forces have mentioned about its performances in the country's political realm as functions in the similitude of a properly maintained and well-equipped 'fire brigade' that would emerge in time for the very rescue of the country. But here one must wonder why would fire break out repeatedly in the same home called Pakistan. Today Pakistan is once again heading towards electioneering and hopefully by this fall transfer of power to the elected civilian government will take place. But if the outgoing military government does not bother about the behavioral issue that our leadership class is faced with then the very 'fire brigade' will soon be called again for yet another rescue.
