Passing Songs...

Goodbye to Love
by The Carpenters

i'll say goodbye to love
no one ever cared if I should live or die
time and time again the chance for love has passed me by
and all i know of love is how to live without it
i just can't seem to find it
so i've made my mind up, i must live my life along
and though it's not the easy way i guess i've always known

i'd say goodbye to love
there are no tomorrows for this heart of mine
surely time will lose these bitter memories and I'll find
that there is someone to believe in and to live for
something I could live for
All the years of useless search have finally reached an end
and loneliness and empty days will be my only friend
from this day love is forgotten
i'll go on as best i can

What lies in the future is a myst'ry to us all
No one can predict the wheel of fortune as it falls
There may come a time when I will see that I've been wrong
but for now this is my song
and it's goodbye to love
i'll say goodbye to love

Passing Poems...

Room
by Rod McKuen

Ceiling cracks,
dusty woodwork,
a spider’s web half started,
I know this room by heart.
I find my way
from bed to toilet
in the middle of
the darkest night.

Half asleep or wide awake
I need no map
to help me thread my way
past and in between
the obstacles that fill up full
this empty room

I’d post a letter
but I don’t know your address.
I’d call
but how would I begin
let alone maintain a conversation?
Once I’d promised to forget you
I ran backward
Making sure
that I’d remember you
for always.

The doorbell buzzes
at odd times
in the morning
or the night,
maybe all day long
if I were here
to hear it.

I never answer
since it isn’t you.
And if it were
on opening the door
I’d only open
brand new memories
that even as they happened
I’d be making resolutions
to forget.

Let's Pretend I Have a Thesis. Pretend Lang...
December 18 , 2005

ayan, aalis na ako papuntang Davao. goodbye. good luck. good christmas. good new year. good whatever.

don't forget to greet me on my birthday: dec.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

ayan, mawawala na ako for the next few weeks. i'll be back in manila by jan. 1 (ang sad) anyway, for now, i'll leave you with:

my not-so-grownup christmas list

1. pera (also known as book money. pero kung gusto niyo...)

2. libro talaga (basta wag lang tagalog. hala. naalala ko may assignment nga pala ako sa pi100. anywayz...)

3. a semblance of a thesis (okay, meron na pala. therefore, a concrete thesis. sa words ni armando lao, hindi abstract.)

4. si *toot*! (joke lang. pero according to freud [or if not him, someone else] jokes are half-meant.)

5. world peace (joke lang ulit. pero totoong joke na 'to. di na half-meant. hindi naman sa ayaw ko ng world peace. pero as if.)

okay then, sasabihin ko ulit para maging redundant. wala lang.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

55 New Messages and The Golden Globes...
December 17 , 2005

Okay, so my blog-life (not to mention my whole online-life) has been kinda lost lately (see previous posts and take note of the dates) and I know that a lot has happened lately with the POV and the 20-days-till-i'm-20-arcade-celebration and the Cinema Yule Ball and the Lantern Parade/Miss Eng'g and the equally lostness of my thesis mode and the seeing of the ex-crush, etc...

but i find that i have nothing really interesting to say.

except this:

i'm 19 and almost 20. still single and living vicariously through the romantic attachments of other people. and hopefully will graduate soon if i can somehow get my act together... (but i exaggerate, i'm doing fine thesis-speaking, and academically speaking, and extra curricular activities aka organization speaking and friend speaking and all other types of speaking except the romantic-type which is overrated anyway and i'm not really making sense anymore.)

so there, now it's established that i'm fine (how are you, by the way?), here are the golden globe nominees for...

Lots more of this in imdb. Sadly, no King Kong nod for best picture (haven't watched it yet though it's showing in theaters now. hope its showing in davao since its cheaper to watch there. if not, video 48 here we go!). I'm also dying to watch Match Point and Brokeback Mountain and Breakfast on Pluto and The Producers (waah, not to mention Elizabethtown. video 48 here we go again!)

It think that Brokeback Mountain will get most awards though. I only hope P&P will get some too but i don't think so. though i like Johnny Depp, am rooting for Cillian Murphy to win best actor in a musica/comedy.

Let's go Oscars! (an labo)

Lost
December 16 , 2005

There are days when you can't help but wonder if you really know what you're doing.

This is one of those days.

Elizabeth
November 27, 2005

forgive me for excluding Elizabeth in my comparisons. But I have nothing really to say except Keira Knightley's Elizabeth is more tomboyish while Jennifer Ehle's Elizabeth is more mature, though still playful and Aishwarya Rai is, well, Indian.

the many faces of Elizabeth (Keira Knightley, Jennifer Ehle and Aishwarya Rai)

As I said, I'll post a better article someday, but for now, I've watched P&P about 5 times already so I think I'll give it a rest and wait for it to show in an actual theater. (But i'm dying to watch the trailer again. It's one of the best trailers I've ever seen in my life. The only other trailer that affected me like this was The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.)

Anyway, I've been hanging out around imdb a lot and discovered that The Last Unicorn will be made into a live action film. Christopher Lee will play King Haggard while Jonathan Rhys Meyers will play Schmendrick the Magician. No news on who will play Lady Amalthea and Prince Lir. I wish a copy of the animated version will appear in the horizon someday soon.

Pride and Prejudice: The 5th Time Around
November 26, 2005

I've forgotten the exact date I first read Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I remember reading about it and I remember finally reading it sometime in high school and enjoying it immensely and until now it's still in my favorite books list.

one day, i went to watch Bridget Jones's Diary with my friends and the first time I saw Colin Firth on screen, i thought to myself: this guy would make a perfect Darcy. after some research, I found out that he did play Mr. Darcy in BBCs adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Of course, it took a couple of years before I was able to find a copy of the TV miniseries and actually watch it and after watching it at least 4 times and watching other adaptations of P&P, my opinion has not changed. Colin Firth still is the perfect Darcy.

Not to say that Matthew MacFadyen doesn't make a great Mr. Darcy in the recent P&P adaptation. While Firth as Darcy is smouldering and sexual, MacFadyen is more tortured and romantic. And though I would love to insert some comparison with Laurence Olivier's Darcy, I can barely remember the 1940 P&P movie. Still, any of them is better than Martin Henderson's Darcy in Bride and Prejudice who was so bland i developed a crush on Aishwarya Rai's Elizabeth instead.

the many faces of Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen, Colin Firth, Laurence Olivier [right] and Martin Henderson [left])

I also think that Keira Knightley made a terrific Elizabeth. A bit too thin, though but lively and pleasant just the same.

The debate now is which one is the best adaptation. I love the BBC version because it is the one long enough to fit most of the story in. I find it a bit TV-ish though, especially when compared to the 2005 version's glorious cinematography. And I found the characters in the 2005 film more real in a sense that they are more modern compared to the more mannerly BBC version. The main difference is indeed that the BBC version was more of a comedy of manners about the society during their time while the 2005 version is more of a passionate romantic tale (or a historical rom-com film as my friends would put it.)

the lovers united (Keira Knigtley and Matthew MacFadyen, Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, Aishwarya Rai and Martin Henderson)

But I guess any debate is useless. And I would like to post a more scholarly one in the future when I have copies of all films with me. But for now let me say that Pride and Prejudice, in whatever medium, country or time, is still one of the best love stories ever written and should be enjoyed no matter how or when or why.

some more comments:

Rosamund Pike who plays Elizabeth's older sister Jane has some percent of Filipino blood in her veins.

Orlando Bloom, is that you? well not really, but Rupert Friend who plays Wickham looks a lot like him, it's disturbing.

aren't they just gorgeous? bwahahahaha!

Bago Ako Bigyan ng Nag-Blog Ka Pa Award Ni Ms. Irene Ladignon...
November 17, 2005

Paalam.

A Note on Chickens*
November 1, 2005

why did the stupid chicken cross the road and get run over by a 10-wheeler truck?

i'll tell you why. because it was too busy looking at the chicken-of-his-dreams at the other side, that's why. too busy gazing at the other chicken's smile to pay attention to his brain or his peripheral vision. not to mention the other not-so-dreamy-but-nonetheless-cool chickens at his side of the road. no, the stupid chicken just had to make that attempt to cross the road to get to the other side.

all chickens are idiots. and going after one is suicide, not to mention even more idiotic. but what can we do if the nature of a chicken is indeed idiotic?

therefore, i will not be unos by a one-way chicken or a lack of chickens for that matter, one-way or other.
