View of Man, Sin and Salvation
Article 2 of the Articles
of Faith: "We believe that men will be punished for their own sins,
and not for Adam's transgression."
Article 3 of the Articles
of Faith: "We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind
may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel."
Article 4 of the Articles
of Faith: "We believe that the first principles and ordinances of
the Gospel are:
Faith in the Lord
Jesus
Repentance
Baptism
Laying on of hand, for the gift of the Holy Ghost" D & C
88:22
The Nature of
Man:
- Man is inherently
good
- Children are
unable to sin before age 8
- if this is
true, why do parents have to teach there children the differences
between right and wrong?
- Human Agency (freedom
to choose, good or evil) D & C 11:12
- No original sin
(no link to Adam) (no sinful nature)
- Man is able
to choose good from evil from birth. (See Romans 8:7,8)
- All things were
spiritual before the fall (became physical after the fall)
The Fall of
Man:
- Blessing not a
curse
- Brought Joy - now
we have a choice to choose good over evil
- Able to bear children
after the fall
- Everyone will be
punished for their own sins, and not Adam's.
Sin:
- "Mistakes,
failures, or bad habits" (Ensign 4/1990 p. 9)
- "All of us
are guilty of sin to some degree" (Gospel Principles p.
117)
- One can not sin
in ignorance (Articles of Faith p. 57)
Five Big Sins:
(which Christ's Atonement can NOT forgive)
- Murder (D &
C 42:18)
- Apostasy (D &
C 84:41)
- Breaking the Words
of Wisdom
- Sexual Immorality
- Refusal to bear
children (Gospel Principles p. 229)
Biblical Big
Sins
- Adultery - John
8:3-11
- Divorce - John
4:7-42
Law:
- No one can come
to God except by his law
- God gives the law
to provide a way where by we can be come like Him
- Man has the ability
to keep the law
Repentance:
- Change of behavior/
abandoning sin
- Total obedience
to the law
- No repentance without
punishment (D & C Student, p. 224)
The Gospel
(the plan of salvation based on human effort)
- Eternal life must
be wholly merited or earned
- Total obedience
to a code of laws
Salvation:
(the plan) (click here to see a map of the progression)
- Most are saved
by God's grace, even those without faith
- That is why
Mormons believe in three Heavens
- Telestial (slowest)
- Terrestrial
(middle)
- Celestial (eternal
life, becoming a God, exaltation, for good Mormons who got married
in a temple)
Now good Mormons who did not get married in a temple can get in
to the Celestial heaven, but they will be servants to the Mormons
who got married in a temple.
- To get eternal
life (exaltation) Mormons need to:
- Have faith
- Repentance
- Baptism
- Laying on of
Hands
- Keeping the
Word of Wisdom
- Tithing
- Marriage in
temple
- Large family
- Good works
- Temple Ceremonies
- Baptism for
the dead

(Romans 6:16)

God (Romans 1:21,28,31)
- lack of faith (Romans

Purpose of Law:
The purpose of the
law is to show us how bad we are, not how good we are.
Repentance:
Repentance is knowing
you have broken God's law (sinned), and that He forgives you (after you
asked for forgives) and you don't think about the sin. If you keep dwelling
over you sin, Satin keeps winning, but if you know that God still loves
you and for gives you of your sin, then Satin losses.
