Hi,
I'm Howard Cutler (aka Samplman). I collect license plates, yes, I said License plates.
I've been collecting license plates since 1992. It all started when someone I worked with said he was going to Alaska. I asked him to bring me back a license plate. From that point on I was hooked.
My first goal was to collect a plate from every state and Canadian province (what collector dosen't have that run?) From there I dabbled a little bit with foriegn plates, but they weren't as interesting as the U.S.plates.
I soon discovered the ALPCA, (Automobile License Plate Assoc.). All those years I thought, "No one but me collects these things." Boy, was I wrong! My son and I attended the 1996 convention in Peoria. As soon as I got home, I sent in my membership dues. I am also a member of the MLPCA, (Michigan License Plate Collector Assoc.), NILPS, (Nevada International License Plate Society), MAPA, (Mid America License Plate Assoc.), and the NPCC, (Number Plate Collectors Club). Now I'm collecting sample plates. I've got a complete run of both the United States and Canadian sample plates plus several International samples, but with all the new issues coming out, it just keeps on growing. I'm trying to collect some of the sample plates that the state dmv's say don't exist. These are the ones that they don't make available to the collecting public. Along with these I'm also interested in "Prototype" plates.
I also collect Inaugural plates and Olympic plates.
People often ask what I do with all the plates I collect. I'm in the process of refinishing my basement, and the walls are going to be covered. When it's done, I'll post a couple shots in the photo album. (That's still under construction)
