...That is indeed a good question to ask.

This is exactly the dilemma Kotoko faces in Episode 4.

What's happening >>> Reiko has asked Naoki out for a date. Kotoko and Watanabe (in the background) overheard them and have also turned up to spy on the couple.

While Kotoko and Watanabe are bickering with each other, Reiko asks Naoki his future direction in life - to enrol in Todai, or to go overseas for further studies. She is clear about the fact that she will follow Naoki wherever he goes. The latter shows his disapproval upon realising Reiko is deciding her future based on him and looks troubled/worried when Reiko even declares that she will not leave his side.

There is one part where Reiko makes snide remarks about Kotoko and declares that she will not lose to her. Naoki looks irritated and asserts that this doesn't concern Kotoko. (p/s: I like the way Naoki tries to protect Kotoko! ;p )

Reiko then tells Naoki to look at her in the face. When Naoki turns around, Reiko immediately kisses him on the lips. Naoki is shocked but his degree of shock is nowhere compared to Kotoko's. The poor girl then calls out his name in a heartbroken tone. 

Naoki is surprised to see Kotoko there while Reiko gives a self-satisfied smile as her ultimate aim is achieved - to get back at Kotoko.

" Naoki! You big 'baka'! "

While she is walking away from the cafe, tears can't stop flowing down for the heartbroken Kotoko... Flashes of the kissing scene keep coming back to her.

Flashback: what Kotoko has said to Watanabe >>>

"In my eyes, I only see Naoki and no others."

"Other than Naoki, no one else has the right to call me 'baka'!"

Just imagine how hurt she must be...

That night, Kotoko absents herself from dinner and Naoki keeps glancing at her empty seat.

Unaware of what has happened, Machiko accuses Naoki of bullying Kotoko again.

He has this unsettled expression on his face and makes no comments. However, he then tries to hide his troubled feelings by busy himself eating.

Unknown to them all, in the darkness of her bedroom, Kotoko has cried herself to sleep.
