Putting Women Back into the History of the Development of the Sciences:
Women's Intellectual Contributions to the Study of Mind and Society
No wonder women researchers and developers got left out of history with
attitudes like these:
"The chief distinction in the intellectual powers of the two sexes is
shown by man's attaining to a higher eminence, in whatever he takes up, than
can woman." - Darwin (1871)
"Identical education of the sexes is a crime before God and humanity, that
physiology protests against and that experience weeps over." - Clarke (1873)
"Deficiency in reproductive power . . . can be reasonable attributed to
the overtaxing of (women's) brains." - Spencer (1867)
"The 'woman's rights movement' is an attempt to rear, by the prcess of
'un-natural selection', a race of monstosities - hostile alike to men, to
normal women, to human society, and to the future development of our race." -
Bagehut (1879)
To illustrate the fact that statements such as these failed to deter ALL
women:
Women such as Christine Ladd-Franklin, Ruth Fulton Benedict, and Ida
B. Wells have traditionally been omitted from the histories of their
disciplines. The webpage above is designed to re-place women into the history of
psychology, sociology, anthropology, and social work. Students, as part of an
advanced seminar, examined and wrote about the lives of these women, their
intellectual contributions, and the unique impact and special problems that
being female had on their careers. This webpage represents the culmination of
these students' work.
Bi resource centre based in Boston, MA. Their pamphlets (pdfs) are
particularly good. There are a lot of articles, and requests for other
groups to notify their existence to make it easier to find each other.
They are also looking for writers of quality articles and papers about
bisexuality.
Thought-provoking words on Bi "This is an example of one of the biggest
internal borders to pride faced by bisexual people: the feeling that we're only
half-caste members of the queer community, that no matter what we do we're not
really queer enough, that we're not out enough, that we're not radical enough,
that we're not really worthy of a place in the queer community."
Apart from the tacky sex sites there is so little on the net to help women
find each other. Believe it or not, although this is a dating link, an
enormous number of women seem to have found it, and many are looking for quality
friendships with likeminded souls, rather than a date. You can put your
profile up for free, but I highly recommend you take out at least the 3-month
membership and use the email facility to investigate possible good connections.
A mug shot of yourself shows a genuine nature and will get many more hits than a
profile without one. Many women avoid profiles which don't include a photo
for that reason.
Free bi chat, personal
ads, forums, articles and more. This is a very comprehensive site,
and there's no membership fees. It's meant to be a site to cater to
everyone, so if sexual discussion or explicit language is offensive to
you then you might prefer not to visit. The site gets around 30,000
hits a month, and has a diverse audience.
