Summary of the DraftWeekend!

June 24, 2000

- By Phil Austin

Another wild draft has come and gone this year around, and the question being asked right now is: How exactly did it affect the Oilers? Well, I was right, Jim Dowd was selected, but Robertsson was one that I didn't expect. I think we got hit pretty harder than I thought we would. I thought Selivanov was gone this weekend, but it turns out that he survived again. Look for GM Kevin Lowe to give him away for anything. I'd like to see him stick around, but it's common knowledge that Selly is not in Lowe's or MacTavish's good books.

The player we drafted turned out to be a mystery. There seems to be a lack of information on Alexei Mikhnov, the hulking center from Russia. I'm not complaining; some of the better surprises around the league were drafted with little exposure. Maybe in a few years, this monster could step in and make an impact in our lineup when Doug Weight hits unrestricted free agency and bolts from Edmonton. All's I know is that we have a lack of solid center prospects in the organization, and I'm glad to have finally seen the Oilers select one.

Finally, Roman Hamrlik was dealt to the New York Islanders today, in a move that surprised few people. Most agreed that the Hammer's time in Edmonton was up, and I think we got some quality prospects in return for Hamrlik. Eric Brewer is a former first round draft pick with very good potential. Look for him to be paired up with Tom Poti or Igor Ulanov this season. Josh Green, the other warm body the Oilers got in return has been regarded by some to be a younger Ethan Moreau. Born in Camrose, Alberta, this home-grown kid should fit well into the Oilers lineup, and could claim a spot on the 2nd or 4th lines, where we have open positions this coming season.

It's been said that the team that gets the best player in a trade, wins it, but if either Brewer or Green can fit into the lineup and contribute to any extent, the Oilers could be the ones coming out on top in the long run.
