The First Goats at Riverview-Ranch
page 2
After awhile somebody, must have been my mom, thought we should have a milk goat (We still had Pedro and Patchy). We found somebody who had goats, and bought a grade doe, who looked Saanen, and her doe kid, who looked like her father must have been a Toggenburg of some sort. The doe kid, Kendra, was mine, but I got to milk her dam, Lady. At first, Lady's milk tasted awful! By this time, we knew some more about goats and decided to worm her. Worming Lady improved the milk flavor a lot. Of course, in the fall, we wanted to get them bred. I had seen a buck at our county fair that I wanted to get Kendra bred with. My mom got the name of the person who (we thought) had the buck. She didn't own that buck, but had another Alpine buck, a Kinder buck or two, and a Nubian buck. I decided to use the Alpine. Kendra and Lady came into heat, and we took them to get bred. Annie (my sister) decided to use the Kinder buck on Lady. We got a 50% 4-H discount on the buck service fee. Kendra ended up aborting (I think) and Lady didn't settle, so we got them re-bred. The person who owned the bucks was Ramona Birdsall of Beauty Mountain Farm. I wanted to get a bred Alpine doeling, but Mona didn't have any available, so I decided to get a doe kid in the spring. I wrote back and forth with Mona throughout the winter, and we learned many things from her, including stuff about CAE. We agreed that it would be a good idea to have our goats tested in the spring.
We did get our goats tested-four of them. Kendra and Lady came up positive, and Pedro and Patchy were negative. We decided that after Kendra and Lady kidded, they would be put down, so they wouldn't spread the disease to other goats. It was a hard decision, but I have never once regretted that decision. In March, babies started arriving at Beauty-Mountain Farm, and we, of course, went up to see them. I got an American Alpine doe kid that I named Dancer. I got Dancer when she was around 3 weeks old, and I think she is the most spoiled goat to ever live on this farm! I learned a lot about goats from Mona, and am still learning! I still have Dancer, as mentioned on my main page.
Lady kidded on May 21, 1995 with twins- a buck and a doe.
Here is a picture of Lady's kids. May-May, the doe kid, is the white one and the otherkid, the brown one, is Willy. Kendra kidded on May 25 with twin does-named Hannalee and Roslyn, Hannah and Rosy for short. We raised Hanna, Rosy, Willy, and May-May on a CAE prevention program, and of course, kept them separate from their mothers. We had Lady and Kendra butchered and sold Pedro and Patchy. But now we had lots of baby goats to play with (my mom had bought some wethers that we were going to raise for meat) which we had a lot of fun.
Now I have a herd of seven goats, 5 Alpines, a Pygmy, and her kid. The Alpines CAE and Johne's negative (haven't yet tested the Pygmy for CAE, she did test negative for Johne's though), none of the goats have ever had abscesses and they are vaccinated and wormed regularly. The rest of my page(s) are about the goats I have now, so I won't go into a story with them. I hope you enjoyed reading how I got into goats.
