Please allow me to summarize the entire situation: An overwhelming amount of evidence confirms Mumia Abu-Jamal's guilt. There were 5 eyewitnesses who gave convincing testimony against Abu-Jamal, and the total amount of evidence proofs beyond a reasonable doubt that his gun was the murder weapon. The alleged new evidence does not exist. Even Abu-Jamal's former lawyer, Daniel Williams, called his most important “new witnesses” a disaster. There was no running man and there was no conspiracy by the police. Mumia Abu-Jamal murdered Daniel Faulkner. There are no doubts.
Anyway, the “Free Mumia Movement” still exists. It's by far not as strong as in the 1990s but it's still able to draw public attention. Why does it still exist? Why some authors like Lindorff, Schiffmann, and O'Connor try to show Abu-Jamal's innocence even though they should know better? Books and other articles in favor of Abu-Jamal are not even consistent and every new book adds an additional innocence scenario. Why so many intelligent and educated people try to proof the innocence of a guilty man? The answer hasn't anything to do with Abu-Jamal.
America and left-wing ideology
America and its free – capitalist – economy is still the biggest enemy of left-wing groups all over Europe and in the United States. The United States are pretty much different from the social-democratic countries in Europe, and – what an insult to all good lefties – the American economy works. If the USA would be an underdeveloped country, lefties wouldn’t hate her but feel sorry. However, since the United States do not fit to the theory of socialism, good old communists seem to hate that country.
According to left-wing propaganda the USA is a terrible country. White supremacists rule the country while the brutal and corrupt police oppresses the black minority. Of course, according to their view the United States is a country full of social problems. On the other hand, Abu-Jamal is a black revolutionary in white America who fights for social justice and human rights. Abu-Jamal is their comrade and has to be rescued from the evil powers that be.
The dogma about evil America has been created decades ago. At the same time it’s difficult to show this “fact” in a believable way. Most Europeans to not share that opinion, and they are not impressed or emotionally touched by false arguments. Even though left-wing propaganda can be found in mainstream media its influence is limited. In order to reach out for the emotional feelings something more effective than social diatribes is required. Therefore, justice, human rights, and the death penalty are the topics most often abused to create a “basis” for anti-American feelings. A verdict of death gets attention and if the victim is a seemingly innocent person, that verdict can result in strong emotions.
The fight against the death penalty
In order to hide anti-American ideology the fight for human rights often is the main topic when criticizing the United States. However, not even in this case left-wing propaganda is believable. Some two years ago I have conducted a Google search for articles related to the death penalty (German language only) and checked the thirty top-rated articles opposed to that form of punishment (almost all articles were opposed to the death penalty). Of all these articles, 26 criticized the USA and only 4 mentioned other countries besides the United States. This confirms my impression that actual demonstrations against the death penalty are always against the death penalty in the United States. But what’s about other countries like Iran or China?
When 16-year-old Athege Radschabi has been hanged on 15 August 2004 in Iran because of indecent behavior (pre-marital sex), that murder in the name of justice has been ignored by left-wing commentators. The Süddeutsche Zeitung (a daily newspaper in Germany) even called it a “less cruel execution”. The article reports as a success of the “European-Iranian human rights dialog” that the 16-year-old girl was not stoned to death, but rather hanged. All the other death sentences in Iran are ignored, as well. Criticizing Iran’s justice system would be cultural chauvinism and this must not happen within the left-wing universe. They simply ignore how they support murder in the name of Political Correctness.
Just think about a situation were a 16-year-old girl from Philadelphia will be accused and sentenced to death for pre-marital sex. The uproar not only in Europe but in the entire world would be gigantic. Barbaric Americans would be the targets of criticism for many years. However, since it only happened in Iran there is no left-wing criticism. The Iran is not the enemy and, therefore, good lefties keep silent.
The same applies to China. The estimated number of executions per year is above 3000. That’s about the size of the entire death row in the United States and about three times the number of US executions since 1976. Trials in China usually are very fast. It happens quite often that it only takes a few weeks for arrest, conviction, appeals and execution. In some cases Chinese authorities have admitted that they made mistakes because later on another person has been convicted for the same crime. China is a nightmare for every opponent of the death penalty. Only left-wing propaganda does not care.
It’s obvious that protests against the death penalty in the United States are not against the death penalty but nothing more than a thinly veiled excuse. In reality these are protests against the United States. They are not the result of injustice but the result of political ideology.
Fascist movements
Fascist movements have many things in common. For example, they tend to use their own language, which often reminds on Orwell’s Newspeak. Another item is the absence of positive objectives. Fascist groups have no visions of a better future but only concepts of enemies. They need these enemies. This does not only apply to right-wing fascists (Nazis and others) but to left-wing fascists, as well. They even sound the same way.
When I read on the website of Labournet Austria (among a lot of other nonsense) “then we have to fight the last battle for our comrade Mumia” (if the last appeal would be denied), I immediately had to think about Nazi-propaganda. The real objective is clearly visible. They use the concept of the enemy “American Justice” in order to keep their own followers motivated. At the same time they have no problems to glorify murders for revenge after World War II and they even state that these murders were “deserved punishment”. The murder victims were true or alleged Nazis and, as a result, a trial in a court of law was not required. Just shoot them. Regarding to these murders I found the statement “how much cleaner the air was at that time”.
At the end, left-wing followers are only abused by their leaders. The collective fight against evil is nothing else than an excuse, maintaining the numbers of members and supporters is the real target.
What does this mean for Abu-Jamal?
Almost nothing. Courts in the United States do not care about political pressure by supporters of Abu-Jamal. Demonstrations in the streets will never change a decision based on the merits of an argument. French delegations visiting the mayor of Philadelphia will never achieve anything. By the way, if they want to achieve anything they would have to meet District Attorney Lynne Abraham and convince her. (They wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell.)
Political pressure could influence politicians only. Before the death sentence has been vacated, Abu-Jamal’s chances to receive clemency would have been increased by showing remorse. By putting the head in the sand and supporting his unbelievable claims of innocence his supporter have helped to forever destroy his chances to receive clemency. They did not help Abu-Jamal but abused him for their own purposes. No reasonable politician would ever grant clemency to a remorseless cop killer. If the death sentence will ever be re-instated and executed these supporters will partially be responsible for his death.
Actually, I think this scenario doesn’t seem to be very likely. After the decision of the Third Circuit Court Abu-Jamal’s fate seems to be rather clear. Most likely he will stay behind bars for the rest of his life, where he belongs.
Also in future his supporters will use him. He still can be useful as a shared topic for various left-wing groups and as a basis to collect donations. Who knows where all the money went which has been collected in his name?
Mumia Abu-Jamal can be used for a lot of purposes. If he would not exist someone would have to invent him.
