Methodology

The AHI class is taking the topic of war as the basis to strengthen the analytical skills of the attending students in turn to prepare them for their thesis research. Rather than being a comprehensive analysis of war as a phenomenon it will pick certain focuses on war which in turn will be analyzed by the students. The idea is to approach war through an array of different sources, such as movies, stories, academic research, newspaper articles and methods such as review, mapping, discussion, … Students will improve their skills in analysing the topic of war from various different angles and using a variety of different methods. A major part of the process will be weekly assignments connected to the weekly topic.

Grading Criteria:

Particpation, assignments:   50 %
Midterm assignment:             25 %
Final Paper:                            25 %

One part of the participation score is class attendance. Students who attend less then 11 classes will get a penalty on their particpation score. The second part of the participation score is participation during class (asking questions, participation in groupworks and discussion). The third and major part of the participation score is the grading of the regular class assignments.

The midterm assignment is a either a presentation in class or a written task 700 -1400 words, TNR, size 12 about one of the sources used in class.

The final paper should be a deep analyisis of a topic connected to the input of the class. The topic has to be agreed on between student and lecturers. The paper has to have 2500-4000 words, TNR, size 12.

 

 

Class Rules

Time managment: Both lecturers and students are allowed to be 15 minutes late to class. If the lecturer doesn't arrive within 15 minutes after the beginning, the lecture is post-poned to the next regularly scheduled date or to an extra date agreed upon with the students. Students arriving later than 15 minutes after the beginning of class will get a penalty regarding their attendance and participation scores.
