Medicine.
Since that period up to the present, the University has expanded with the creation and function of new Schools covering a wide spectrum of Humanities and Sciences.
At the present the main University campus extends over an area of 137 acres in the center of the City of Thessaloniki.
Current enrolment of students is about 63.000, distributed in 40 Departments, which cover the full range of scientific disciplines ,some of them exclusive to this University.
Because of its size, structure and activities ,the University of Thessaloniki is the largest of institutions of higher education in Greece.
The organization and administration of teaching and research are based on the principles of independence and academic autonomy.
The highest governing body of the University is the Senate. President of the Senate is the Rector of the University. The main authority in the istitution, as in all universities in Greece is exercised by the Rector and two Vice-Rectors, who are elected by the Faculty and student representatives and serve a 3-year term.
