The city of Thessaloniki

 

Thessaloniki, a port city in Nothern Greece, with a population of 1.000.000, is one of the oldest cities in Europe.

Founded about 315 BC by Cassander, king of Macedonia, it was named after his wife, Thessaloniki, sister of Alexander the Great.

Since then, the city has become the regional capital of Macedonia and Thrace.

Among its monuments of special interest are those from the Roman period, i.e.
The Triumph Arch of Galerius and the Rotonda,
as well as from the Byzantine period, churches of significant historical and artistic importance.

The modern era of development in Thessaloniki dates from the begining of the twentieth century.

The Ministry of Macedonia-Thrace,
The University
and a Court of Justice,
in addition to other major government istitutions are located in the city.

The city has two sectors: The old city and the modern sector.

In addition to the University, there are numerous institutions which contribute to the academic and cultural life of the city.

Among them are:

Thessaloniki is a thriving city in commerce, finance and industry and one of the most significant trade and communications centers in the Mediterranean.

This is evident from its port with its special Free Zone, its international airport and its annual International Fair.

In addition, major cultural events take place each year, sush as:
the Demetria Festival, {in the name of the patron saint Demetrios (October/November), }
Film festivals
and exhibitions of the visual and performing arts.
