Adobe Type Manager Deluxe ** As of the release of Mac OS 10, Adobe is not planning to continue development of ATM Deluxe. OS 10 users can use Suitcase or FontReserve. ** G4 "slowdown" If you are experiencing a "Slowdown" on your G4 with QuarkXPress 4.04/ATM/Mac OS 8.6, it's because there's a bug in the Apple Font Manager Update extension... to fix it, use DiamondSoft's FontFixer for 8.6 instead. To completely remove a font from ATM Deluxe's font database, hold down the Command and Control keys and click the trash icon. This is very useful when replacing fonts with newer versions, or when opening temporary fonts that you don't want to keep any record of. Remember that you can always drag your main "fonts" folder into ATM Deluxe's "known fonts" window... it will not add any fonts that it already has on the list... this is a good way to ensure you have a list of all your current fonts in ATM Deluxe. You can use ATM Deluxe's "verify" tool to quickly check a font's integrity. Damaged fonts should be replaced with originals, or re-cut with a program like Fontographer. Unless you have a very slow machine, it's recommended that you turn on "smooth font edges on screen" in ATM (preferences). Note however, that under most circumstances, ATM will only smooth (anti-alias) postscript fonts. To also make your Truetype fonts smooth on screen, turn on "smooth all fonts on screen" in your "appearance" control panel (this will ensure all your fonts in your web browser will be smooth). Even after turning on screen smoothing, if your fonts look distorted, especially in form fields (boxes on a page where you can enter text), then it could be because there are two formats of the same font open. To fix this, make sure that your system folder only has the basic system fonts, and that you don't have any Postscript versions of those fonts open at the same time (Web browsers seem to handle TrueType fonts better). Always make sure "enable font substitution" is turned off in ATM's preferences. This ensures that you always know whether or not you have the actual fonts used in a job. This is obviously very important in a pre-press workflow. There is no harm in having "enable auto-activation" turned on... this will allow programs like Quark to automatically open required fonts when opening new documents (if you have them installed).
