Creating PostScript files from QuarkXpress 6

Ensure the Adobe PDF printer is set up correctly

(These steps assume that you are running Mac OS 10.3.3 or later, and have the full version of Acrobat Professional installed.)

Launch Printer Setup Utility and confirm that the "Adobe PDF" printer is available in the Printer List. If it's not available, follow these steps to recreate it:

  1. Quit Acrobat and Printer Setup Utility if they are running.
  2. Delete the AdobePDF.app application that's installed in /Library/Application Support/Adobe/
  3. Launch Acrobat 6. You will be prompted to authenticate the installer by entering your password.
  4. Launch Printer Setup Utility and verify that Adobe PDF has been added to the printer list.

If that doesn't work, you may need to add the printer manually:

  1. Launch Printer Setup Utility
  2. Hold down the Option key and click the Add button in the Printer List window.
  3. Select Advanced from the Printer connection drop-down menu.
  4. In the Device Field, select "Adobe PDF (pdf)"
  5. For Device Name, type the following: Adobe PDF
  6. For Device URI, type the following: pdf://www.adobe.com
  7. For Printer Model, select Adobe.
  8. Click OK

Create the PostScript file

  1. File > Print.
  2. In the Setup tab select "Adobe PDF" for your Printer Description.
  3. Select the appropriate paper size. If you want to maintain the dimensions of a custom sized document like 19 x 29 instead of fitting it to a preset size like letter, then enter the width and leave the height at "automatic".
  4. In the Output tab select the correct Print Method (Composite CMYK, Grayscale, etc.)
  5. Select Page Setup and select "Adobe PDF" from the Format for drop down menu (as far as I can tell, you can ignore the page size here as long as you followed step 3 above). Select OK.
  6. From Quark's Print menu select the Printer tab and select "Adobe PDF" from the Printer drop down menu.
  7. From the third drop down menu select Output Options and select the Save as File checkbox.
  8. Select Postscript from the Format drop down menu.
  9. Select Save.
  10. Name the file and append it with .ps if necessary (you may have to do this twice!!).
  11. You now have a postscript file for Distiller.
