Text cut off in Finder windows

Mac OS 9.x has a bug that causes text to be cut off when printing a finder window that requires more than one page. Specifically, the second page will only print about an inch at the top, and the rest of the page(s) will be blank. This bug has been documented on Apple's Support Discussions (registration required), but Apple has not provided a fix. There are two workarounds:

  • Apple support staff have suggested dragging a folder onto a window in Netscape, and printing that window from the Web browser. This provides the name, size, and modified date of the file(s). This does not work in Internet Explorer.
  • A better solution is to download the free program DiskCatalogMaker, which will print a folder using a System 7 window's appearance, providing any Finder view option (customizable). This program has been tested and works well, with the only documented limitation being a 32-K size limit.

Sizes not available in page setup

If you ever have a problem with 11X17 not being available in the Page Setup of an app and/or being unable to select Printer Specific Options in the Print Dialog box, here's a possible solution:

Find a folder called "Parsed PPD Folder" in the Printing Preferences (System Folder > Preferences > Printing Preferences) and throw it out. Go to the Chooser and rebuild your Desktop Printers.

Update your PPDs

Always make sure you have the latest printer description files in your extensions folder. Most manufacturers provide them as free downloads from their Web sites.

Idle desktop printers

If you find that the documents you print just sit in the desktop printers without doing anything, there may be a communication error... the fastest way to fix this is to restart your mac. Check your cables and connections to your printer, and test the ethernet cards on your station as well as the printer.

You can also try stopping the print queue for that desktop printer, rebooting the printer, and then starting the print queue back again.

Postscript errors

If you repeatedly get "postscript error" messages when trying to print a specific document, here are a few of the possible reasons: A corrupted font, a corrupted element in your QuarkXpress document, or conflicting software modules (such as Quark Xtensions).
