Diamonds
inspired arts and imagination for centuries.
Diamond processing has been practiced in Antwerp since the 15th century.
Today it is the most important
trade center in the world with an annual turnover of 23 billion US dollars.
More
than 85% of the world’s rough
diamonds, 50% of cut diamonds and 40% of industrial diamonds are traded here.
The diamond district near Central Station and no larger than one square kilometer comprises
1,500 companies and four of the 22 diamond exchanges in the world.
Right in the heart of the diamond area is also a diamond museum.
The displays guide visitors through the whole production process from
mining to the dazzling end product. The history of industry and trade is also
covered. A complete
19th century workshop has been reconstructed.
The real centerpiece is the treasure chamber where priceless pieces
of jewellery sparkle seductively.
