SHOPPING ON THE MEIR-STREET

On a warm Saturday afternoon you'll be just one of the thousands of shoppers walking this elegant street.  All international chain brands are represented and have taken over the ground floors of most of the buildings.  If you let your gaze drift upwards, you will encounter an interesting range of 18th and 19th century architecture.

 VISIT THE CENTRAL STATION

The central station was built around the turn of the century to replace a wooden station.  It is an example of eclecticism, a mélange of various architectural styles.  In 1895 work began on the iron and glass construction over the platform area.  Then it was the turn of the building itself with its majestic dome high above the enormous hall.  It is often called the railway cathedral.

Antwerp zoo, next to the central station is an oasis right in the heart of the city.  It is one of the oldest and most famous zoos in the  world. A visit is relaxing, fascinating and educational.  In line with the most modern principles the zoo is constructed towards the needs of the animals.  They live in as much freedom as can be allowed according  to its customary life-style and to its own pace.

There are more than 5000 animals.  Part of the Zoo is also a scientific institution of world fame.  The display, preservation and cultivation of plants and animals is only one of its activities.
