The people of Antwerp see their city as the metropolis. Antwerp's consciousness of being a world city has its roots deep in history. The nickname “Sinjoren” which the people of Antwerp wear with pride, city was one of the most important cultural and economic centers in the world. In the eyes of the somewhat envious outsiders, many dates from the golden sixteenth century when the residents lived like true gentleman: courtly and self-assured, like “sinjeurs” (or as the then very important Spanish would have it: “señor”). Antwerp: the city on the Scheldt, the city with the largest gothic cathedral in the Low Countries, the city of Rubens and Plantin,the world diamond center, the second port of Europe, a Burgundian city, a film, concert and theatre city, a historic city with protected monuments and cityscapes, a metropolis! |
