Actually not many people know how to copyright their work. In fact, I didn't know how until I searched for a few hours. Everywhere I went I found the same information.
I found one really useful tidbit that I suggest is probably the best way to prove your work was finished at a certain date. First you write your wonderful poem or story, or what ever it is you want copyrighted. Then send it registered mail it to yourself! Now you have a copy of your -let's say poem- in a sealed envelope, dated by the government. Of course this won't exactly matter unless you want to prove in court you wrote it first because someone plagiarized you. If you want to do this, make sure you don't open the envelope!
Here are some useful websites to get you aware about all the fun details of copyrighting. First off is the 10 Big Myths about copyright explained, all about what is copyrighted on the internet and what is not. Next up is the all important government website. There you can find all the techinical do's and don't's of copyright. Lastly, I came across the Franklin Pierce Law Center website where Professor Thomas G. Field, Jr. has a semi-lengthy essay on Copyright on the Internet.
