22 December 2002
The walk started from the end of the forestry road just
before the summit of Mt Byron. A quick walk uphill took
us first to Mt Byron then along a gently sloping ridge
with views down to our proposed morning tea and
swimming spot. We walked down to our drop off point to
Diana's Bath. The slope was steep and dry with loose
stones hidden in long grass.
On reaching the creek a short stroll took us downstream
to Diana's Bath and a refreshing swim and morning
tea.
After our rest we headed back upstream and along a
vehicle track for about 100 metres before turning
uphill again, skirting around some thick scunge in the
creek bed. We continued contouring until the creek
cleared and the rock hopping began, or rather rock
scrambling, as the boulders were many and none too
small. This kind of exercise is quite exhausting so
lunch brought a welcome respite.
The side creek entries were difficult to identify so,
when the altimeter matched the height of a likely spot
to leave the creek, we headed up back towards Mt Byron.
But this time the way was straight up, steep and loose
with a couple of luckily short cliff scrambles. The
leader got stuck near the top of one cliff and had to
be bodily hauled up by two pair of willing hands.
Thanks, Richard and Steve.
Approaching the top of Mt Byron again the ground
leveled out and normal breathing became possible again.
A much appreciated downhill bit to end the walk back at
the cars. Not exactly the route intended, especially
the last bit (Richard forgot to mention he hadn't
calibrated his altimeter before starting out), but
still an enjoyable walk.
Thanks to Steve who had a supply of icy cold drinks
waiting in the fridge in his car.
The ten of us stopped at Dayboro for a quick drink and
snack before the drive home. Once again a pleasant day
spent with a wonderful bunch of fellow walkers. Thanks
to all of you who came along. Patricia
