The eYe is a 5 CD computer game based or influenced by characters from Queen songs etc. You can shoot, fight, gain knowledge or attempt to hide from the other characters as you move through the various levels, but the goal is to overcome the all-seeing eYe.
The game was released April 4th 1998 (6 months after the original release date - after a team of 22 spent 2 year developing it) yet met a mixed reaction from the public and the critics. Music fans loved it because of the music, but game players complained about the controls not being responsive enough.
The overall consensus seems to be that it is a difficult game to play because of the keyboard / joystick controls, plus it was a long time in the making which resulted in it being dated upon release. It looks good, and sounds great, but that isn't enough for everyone.
The soundtrack in The eYe is of course by Queen - instrumental mixes of regular songs make this game a must even if you're not a game player as the music can be played on your regular audio CD player.
The original literature warned "Don't play track 1 on your HiFi, as that's the game data track, and playing it in a HiFi could damage your HiFi".
When originally released, this boxed set sold for approximately 35 UK pounds sterling. The game has appeared for sale
on Ebay.
There are two different demos (maybe more in other territories?) and a Press Kit (EPK) of the game available (all on separate CD's). The first demo appeared on various UK computer magazines, and is a non-interactive set of QuickTime files (MOV's). Each file introduces the viewer to the 5 domains (levels) in the game (Arena, Works, Innuendo, Theatre and Final).
The second demo, which appeared on number 29 of the French magazine CD-ROM (Feb 1998) is a mixture of the non-interactive demo (as above) and the Press Kit CD (below).
The Press Kit (EPK) includes is a set of QuickTime files plus an A4 glossy folder which includes 5 separate sheets:
- The Press Release
- Facts aand Figures
- A Brief Synopsis
- Game Notes
- An image from The Innuendo Domain
The game was originally to be accompanied by 3 books (separate purchases) which were:
