She, and her management, wish to express the most heartfelt thanks to Kenny Moreland who has helped make the last six months enjoyable, successful, passionate and worthwhile. Kenny will be out and about in the Brighton area gigging in support of his stunning debut album, Cloudburst. Check here for more Kenny Moreland details ..
A change of pace brought us the
second
‘Best of Brighton’
band of the night,
Just Bizarre.
Consisting of the aforementioned
Rachel Innes; on vocals,
keyboards and tambourine, as well as the ultra-talented
singer/songwriter/guitarist
Kenny Moreland .. we were
presented with an acoustic mix of Celtic, soul, r&b and jazz. Being sandwiched
between two full-on electric bands can’t have been easy for JB, but they won
through with flying colours.
My memories of the Doug Hoekstra Spring 2002 England/Scotland Tour are an unfading collection of images, each one sharper than the last. From the granite architecture of Glasgow to the blood red sunset in Portmahomack, each image evokes a memory of the places and faces I encountered. Sometimes actions are born from necessity. In this case Virtual Brighton Magazine deemed it a screaming necessity to kick-off its season of monthly Best of Brighton events with the best line-up of local bands currently waiting in the wings for bigger things. Agent J, Just Bizarre and Garrett will all take to the stage of The Hanbury Ballroom, during the evening of Thursday 27th June 2002, and seek to prove their hard-earned credentials as the Best of Brighton.
On the second night of their Scottish jaunt Rachel & Doug Hoekstra appeared on BBC Radio Scotland's 'Celtic Connection'. The interview and session is archived @ http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/radioscotland/audio_clips_2.shtml#celtic .. Click on Doug Hoekstra link .. (The) City's (Brighton) rising daughter Rachel Innes, wrapping her soulful vocals around his simple yet perfectly constructed songs, which provided eloquent evidence for why (Doug) Hoekstra's already bagged three Grammy nominations. Innes has a voice that fits neatly between Aretha Franklin and Portishead's Beth Gibbons .. (Taken from the Guardian Online..)
The Greys, Brighton, is known locally as the make-or-break performance-epicentre for aspiring upwardly mobile duos & singer/songwriters . As Just Bizarre shed bucketfuls of adrenalin, Jon Pratty, former Sunday Times journalist and present Editor of 24hourmuseum.org, snapped away happily as he tried to capture the moment that will be immortalised on the cover of the imminent 'Just Bizarre Live @ The Greys CD.'
Rachel Innes is joining the Doug Hoekstra combo for the Scottish leg of his tour (dates below). She'll be spreading the Just Bizarre word through the lowlands & highlands. Rachel will be adding backing-vocals to Doug's whispering gems .. future mailing will include a feature on the Nashville-based maestro. Rachel's band, Just Bizarre, wanna exclusively let you in on a little secret. On the evening of Sunday 19 May, Rachel & Kenny will be headlining the Hanbury Ballroom, Brighton. Yup, a potential 180 punters screaming and shouting for more. Could it get any better? Well, yes, apparently .. Because, opening the evening is non other than the mega-talented and truly gentle, Doug Hoekstra. He of 'Around The Margins' fame has tipped his hat and recognised that in their town, Just Bizarre call the shots. Brighton & Hove truly is a one band town .... Watch this space!!
Kenny and myself were blessed with glorious weather, so resulting bike-ride wasn’t too cruel on either the soul or voice. Arrived @ Strummers Studio and stood anxiously waiting for the arrival of proprietor, ‘Ken’. With things going so well within the band, & these weekly rehearsals, I wanted in! Kenny Moreland & myself posed for pictures .. Watch this space .. and then it was down to business. With gigs imminent @ The Greys & 12-Bar we needed to be tight & up-to-speed.
As first gigs go, a late Monday @ The Evening Star was never going to be easy for Virtual Brighton Magazine’s (VBM) featured band, Just Bizarre. For the uninitiated, The Evening Star, Surrey Street, Brighton, is a homely non-spit-and-polish (in the current climate of fake plastic trees, that’s a compliment) one-level drinking den. It offers rocket fuel (lager is for Hove Softies) to its clientele, and plays regular host to a Monday night open-mic for the up-and-coming & the just-plain-brave.
"Hello, would you be interested in sitting in on one of our recording sessions?" "Um, thanks, but who are you?"
You know we get busy here @ Virtual Brighton Magazine (VBM) and sometimes
it's hard to keep the old interest levels fuelled to max. Innes/Moreland © 2002 Clicking on Virginia Woolf (illustration by Mandy Hills), above, activates an exclusive clip of 'Remember'. The track was recorded, as a demo, @ Metway Studios (home to The Levellers) during March 2002.![]()

Brighton Festival 2002 will include a Young People's Multimedia Day, based around digital video, music, web pages, photography, writing, dance for camera & more. Mike Bell has completed Electric Girl (Lost Nebula Mix) - the definitive version of his popular Rachel Innes collaboration. Mike urges you to: "Follow Electric Girl as she enters her melancholy years, abreast of too much sorrow, wishing for the world where horror is no more. "She travels through the nebulas, seeking comfort in their myriad arrangements of colours, and dreams..."
Following on from the critical success of 'Electric
Girl', Rachel's second second collaboration, 'This
Feeling', recently peaked at No.3, on the Besonic UK Dance
& Electronic chart.
Rachel
describes the hit song: "The lyrics to 'This Feeling'
have a kind of Sade feel to them, as they drift over the interwoven musings of
Mike
Bell's clever dance music.
"The hook is a catchy combination of vocal highs and lows. The thought behind the lyrics was about falling in love and how it feels. "How did your first boyfriend/girlfriend make you feel? Did your heart melt when they touched you? Falling in love, the anticipation and excitement of a first date."

Feeling' send £5.00/$10.00 to:
