"The THX is turned off!"

THX isn't a sound format. Its a certification of the equipment used and the auditorium its shown in.

"The paper said that it was playing at 12:30AM."

Showtimes change on Friday, Saturday and Monday. They may also change slightly on other days. Screenings, sneaks, and film rentals affect showtimes. Just remember to look at current listings.

"There's no surround!"

Some movies have little or no surround sound. Twisters, rain, wind, flying helicopters, and a variety of other sounds play well on surround speakers - voices don't. When listening to people talking, don't expect to hear them from the center channel and the surrounds. It doesn't make sense unless they're somewhere with an echo or in special situations. Surround sound should never overpower a scene. It should enhance the experience.
The THX or digital sound trailer provide the best opportunity to listen for surround sound.

"Why don't you just rewind the movie?"

If it were only that easy. Unfortunately, there's a slight difference between a VCR tape and 35mm film. Repeating part of a movie takes an extremely long time. The projectionist must cut, rethread, and reattach the film.
