Plot
Maxine "Max" Deerfield lives in a small lakeside town with her widowed mother, Grace. Max has always loved where she lived and what she did, fixing boats, but she always wanted to get out and see more of the world. Max was never very enthused by the local boys, or the rich tourists who visit the quaint town because most have a girlfriend waiting for them at home. Things seem to change when one of Grace’s old flames, wealthy publisher Lloyd Raines, invites them to his San Diego mansion for the weekend. Max is ecstatic, but Grace is doubtful. She’d rather stay in town with Harry Winslow, who has been a constant companion since her husband’s death. Max began to do some heavy persuading and finally convinces Grace to go. Harry, scared that he will lose her to the rich playboy, proposes to Grace. She is in total shock and tells Harry that she’ll think about it over the weekend.

After arriving in San Diego, Max is introduced to Kyle, the heir to Raines Publishing. This particular weekend there is a big boat race, in which Kyle is driving one of the Raines Publishing Group boats. It is obvious that Max and Kyle don’t really like each other, so she takes this oppurtunity to check out some of the other boats. While wandering, she bumps into Rowdy Heller, another Raines driver. Rowdy then spontaneously asks her to join him on a trip around the harbor in a speedboat. Rowdy tries to impress Max by showing off his driving skills, but she turns the tables and awes him with her driving. When they arrive at the boathouse, Rowdy makes a move on Mac but the couple is delayed by the arrival if Darla, Rowdy’s date.

During dinner that night, Max sees the softer side of Kyle when he tells his father that he wishes to pursue his dream to become a professional photographer and work for National Geographic. Lloyd demands that Kyle, being his only son, stay and work in the family business. After dinner, Max and Kyle head to the garden have an emotional conversation over a bottle of scotch. Max begins to feel sorry for Kyle. Max feels sympathetic towards Kyle, and her feelings for him increase. Meanwhile, while Grace and Lloyd are chatting, he implies that he still wants to have a relationship with her.

Now, will Grace chose the overpowering millionaire Lloyd, or the steadfast Harry? And will Max chose the romantic photographer Kyle, or the arrogant but handsome Rowdy?
