Ants in your Pantry? If your pantry and kitchen cabinets are a mess, don't fret. With a little help from us, you can shake free:


  • Get plastic or glass boxes and tubs. These can be old yogurt boxes, old bottles you have saved, or some nice cookie jars, whatever. Now put in all those loose cookies, crackers, flour in plastic bags, etc. Seal tightly.
  • Get labels or little pieces of paper with glue or tape. Label regularly-used items and things in opaque containers. Is it wheat flour or all-purpose? Keep a cookie jar.
  • Throw out things you never use. When was the last time you used that ancient spice? Throw out things that have gotten old. Clean and put butcher paper or old newspaper on the shelves to protect. You can replace them easily if something spills.
  • Put like things together. Keep a shelf or corner for spices, another for flour, another for beans. Keep regular-use items at eye-level and near where you prepare food.
  • You can also keep smaller containers for daily use. Keep a little salt in the shaker or in a bowl, and the stock in the pantry, and do the same for other items.
  • Keep the cabinets dry. When you wash something, dry it thoroughly first, so that you prevent getting molds and bacteria and insects growing there. Dust out cobwebs. Keep cabinets closed and don't let small children get to them.
  • For dishes and utensils, buy organizers if you can to separate forks and knives and spoons. Keep a drawer or cup for spatulas that you use regularly. Keep stacks of similar pots together (the smaller ones inside the bigger) and separate glass and porcelain from stainless steel and nonstick.
  • Now get ready to prepare a wonderful meal (or, now that it's so organized, anyone else can cook for you!)
