Purging Strategies (try em all!):
- Strategy 1: Take a bunch of old stuff and put it in a box. Mark the date. Come back
after a while (a few months, a year, whenever you remember). Did you really
need any of the stuff? No? Then throw out the box without opening it. You'll
never know what you missed!
- Strategy 2: Get rid of duplicates. Who needs 20 emery boards and 5 fuschia shirts? Keep
just one of each thing.
- Strategy 3: Throw out everything (except vitals like your passport, etc) that you haven't
used in a year. Be ruthless.
- Strategy 4: Look around. What's broken? What doesn't fit? What doesn't really work right?
What doesn't match? Get rid of those things.
- Strategy 5: Invite someone over. Ask them to tell you what they most wish they could have from
your place. Give them those.
What to do with the stuff:
- Give it away to relatives and friends. If they want it, let them have it.
- Give it away to charity. Salvation Army, thrift stores, etc. will take all your old stuff. Some even pay you.
- Have a garage sale, if you are willing to spend the time and effort. Or ask people to take any 10 items for $10 or something like that.
- Make a box and use these items as gifts. Whenever there's a party, holiday, etc. give these away instead of hunting down gifts. Let family and
friends know that's what you're doing so they know what to expect!
