Invalid Page Faults, and GPFs

HOW are you crashing?
For example, compare
how people usually describe it, with
how you need to describe it.

WHERE can you ask for help?

WHY it happens, and WHAT to do about it.

HOW
are you
  crashing

A Netscape
&
Internet  Explorer Example:

Compare what you tell people with what they need to know
When you need help, especially if you need it desperately, there are plenty of kind and well-informed people on the 'Net. But they are not able to help unless you give them information that they can work with.

For example, Jay Garcia, in the Netscape Navigator Newsgroup frequently needs to post the following:

There have been many, many postings concerning *crashing* in Navigator and Communicator. However, the coders are having problems deciphering most of these postings due to the lack of INFORMATION regarding the crash.

    WHAT NOT TO SAY:
    1. My browser crashes, I hate this thing!
    2. Communicator crashes too much, why?
    3. Everytime I click on a link, my browser freezes.
              and on an on ....

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU:
    1) Do you always crash on a particular page?
Do you have a URL for us?
    2) Do you crash when you interrupt something (e.g. when you
clicked on a link while another one was loading)?
    3) Do you crash if you turn Java and JavaScript off?
    4) How much memory do you have?
    5) How much free swap space do you have (e.g. how much Virtual
        Memory do you have)?

And any other descriptive info that you can provide ....

PLEASE do NOT post any replies to THIS posting. Please re-submit a single posting describing in detail WHY you crashed and WHAT you were doing at the time of the crash. Follow the guidlines above and we can fix things a lot quicker ....
    Thanks
    =Jay=

Browsers are not the only culprits:
Windows 3.x and Windows 95 Examples
are you aware of, and are you undertaking, the regular "housekeeping" operations necessary to keep Windows running smoothly?

For example,

do you regularly run
ScanDisk, DiskDefrag and RegClean, and
do you clean out the temps (files starting with ~),
and, Do you delete them FROM DOS?

And what about new software? If you're running Windows 97, for example, this suit of programs thrashes your video card, and many manufacturers have had to recently undate their drivers - have you downloaded the new drivers?

Including these details lets others know about your particular problem, and the things that you've tried. If any terms here sound strange, they are explained below, and if that's not enough, then tell people you heard of doing such and such, but you're not sure what that means. That gives others an idea of HOW they can help, and WHERE to start.

Netscape
Champions

Using NewsGroups (Crash
   Course)

For serious help, you can jump straight to the Netscape Champions at the Netscape Navigator Newsgroup, or the new Netscape.Communicator group if you just downloaded version 4.
Quick!!! How do I use a NewsGroup???

When you get there, News is easy to use: you left-click on subjects to read them, and right-click to "Send and Reply". But read their
Netscape Unofficial FAQ first, so that you don't look silly and get them ticked off at the same time, by asking questions they already answered fifty times today.

Microsoft Helpers There's also the Microsoft Technical Support Group. When you get there, type the name of the module cited in your latest "invalid page fault" in the search form box). Alternatively, go straight to the page listing Microsoft Supporter Newsgroups for dedicated voluntary help, with every piece of MS software you can crash.

What's CAUSING the problem and what can you do For references that will explain why the problem occurs, and where to start fighting it, check out

I hope this page helps others to get out of trouble. If you can think of more newsgroups and helpers that fit that aim, please let me know. I'll add others as I get the chance.
