Invalid Page Faults
 |
 |

 |
Invalid Page Faults have taken pride of place in this list, because they're the Mother of All Crashes, and I'm becoming desperate to stop them. This link goes to a page of explanations and remedies that others might find useful, and a summary of what I've tried so far. (All too often, to little avail as yet). If you can help me with any further measures, I'd sure appreciate it. |

If you don't have a Web page,
don't know any HTML, and
don't know where to start: |
|
|
Get a FREE Web Page template then
 a FREE Web Site and a FREE e-mail address |
|
 |
get a free "template" of a web page, that you can fill out in 10 minutes, from Peter Kent (the guy who wrote The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Internet) - all you do is send an e-mail TO ciginternet@mcp.com and put ownweb in the SUBJECT line! (If your e-mail is already set up, you can just click the previous link and even that's done for you - so all you need to do is click the "SEND" button). Peter's server will send you an e-mail back that contains all the HTML you need to start - you just "fill-in-the-blanks" in a word processor, save the file, then open the file with your browser. There's also some editing tips in the Flowers for Beginners Page.

Don't worry if you don't have an e-mail address and/or don't have an account with an Internet Service Provider, just get a FREE web Site to put your page on, and a FREE e-mail address at Geocities.
Course, every man and his dog knows about Geocities, which is why their site is so popular. Along with popularity, comes slow server responses. Besides that, you might want to reach some specific audiences. So some other free sites you could look at (just in alphabetical order), are:
Allfaiths Press if you're a religious organization;
Esoteric Source Providers if you're a writer "of metaphysical subjects";
GeoCities offers free PERSONAL pages - you can say what you do for a living, but not advertise your business asking for money. So if you would also like a free COMMERCIAL site, you could try Free Yellow too.
MarketNet which is free to anyone;
Nitehawk which is free to anyone (up to 200KB of storage);
The Student Center if you're a student;
USA Online for artists and/or programmers;
Vive Web Connections for non-profit organizations, schools, community centers.

Netscape Champions
 Using NewsGroups (Crash Course) |
|
 |
For serious help, you can jump straight to the Netscape Champions at the Netscape Navigator Newsgroup, or the new Netscape.Communicator group if you just downloaded version 4.
Quick!!! How do I use a NewsGroup???
When you get there, News is easy to use: you left-click on subjects to read them, and right-click to "Send and Reply".
But read their Netscape Unofficial FAQ first, so that you don't look silly and get them ticked off at the same time, by asking questions they already answered fifty times today.

|
Microsoft Helpers |
 |
 |
There's also the Microsoft Technical Support Group. When you get there, type the name of the module cited in your latest "invalid page fault" in the search form box). Alternatively, go straight to the page listing Microsoft Supporter Newsgroups for dedicated voluntary help, with every piece of MS software you can crash. |

- the news server for technical help with Norton Utilities, Norton AntiVirus (or for leads to other software ngs like Visual Cafe), from the Symantec Support Newsgroup. (Another thanks to Stone Free J).

For easy to understand JavaScript tutorials, check out Voodoo's Intro to JavaScript by Stefan Koch (or his JavaScript book, if you read German. (Hope this is a fair swap for your help Stefan)). There's also plenty to Keep you up to date through the links you'll find at the Netscape JavaScript site. |

the Active X Control Pannel and Layout Control Newsgroup if you use that editor for scripting in JavaScript, Visual Basic or ActiveX. |

- Crescendo Winjammer Cakewalk

There's a Crescendo NewsGroup; or for shareware to write your own midi files, try WinJammer or CakeWalk (anybody know a Mac midi composer or the URL for the OctaMed composer and player on the Amiga?). Or for questions about most midi, synth and wave software generally, you could ask Tommy Anderberg (the creator of WaveMaker).

The new de-bugged version of Java Developers Kit [and the Beans Developers' Kit (= "Extensions" in Visual Basic or "Components" in Delphi or Visual Cafe)] are now available at
JDK 1.1.1, and you could also check out
the next monthly issue of JavaWorld, for articles, resources and links.
(While you're there, check their back issues and put yourself on their subscription list for monthly updates).

I hope this page helps others either to get out of trouble, or to start on something they haven't tried yet. If you can think of more newsgroups and helpers that fit that aim, please let me know. I'll add others as I get the chance.
