Two quick Examples of subscribing with both
 |
|

 |
Here's an example of
- adding a server, and
- subscribing to, say, the newsgroup alt.ascii.art
with BOTH browsers -
|
|
 |
Netscape, and ...
|
|
 |
In Netscape 3/GOLD:
- copy: Demonews.mindspring.com
- In NS News, choose menu items:
File | Open new Host
and (CTRL+V to) Paste
Netscape now starts downloading the list of newsgroups available on that
server. But it tells you how many k downloaded (which is useless, because
you want to know how many newsgroups there are in the listing, not how big
the text file of them is :)) ).
DONE!!! :))
|
|
 |
MS IE News
|
|
 |
And with the Internet Explorer News Client:
- copy: Demonews.mindspring.com
- in IE News, choose menu items:
News | Options | Server | Add
and (CTRL+V to) Paste
- click the "Connection" tab
- select "I use a modem"
(and your ISP connection should become the default; if not, select it too)
- tick "automatically connect to this server"
Click the "Advanced" tab
- tick "Use newsgroup descriptions"
[this is optional, but very helpful]
- click "Apply"
- click "OK"
And That's it!!! :))
IE starts downloading the list of available NGs,
and tells you that there's about 25,000!
To FILTER so many newsgroups down to what YOU want,
- click the Newsgroups icon
- click the icon of the server you just added
(and the full list of newsgroups comes up)
- Click in the Box: "Display newsgroups which contain:"
- start typing: alt.ascii.art
watch what happens after you type EACH letter:
by the time you type: alt.as
there will be only ten in the list!
- click on the alt.ascii.art
- click the Subscribe button.
That's it! ENJOY!!! :))
|
|
 |
What's alt.ascii.art anyhow?
|
|
 |
Why ascii art?
To do this:
Remember, that to display ascii art, you have to change the default proportional font to a fixed width font (eg Courier).

Overview
[Newsgroups allow you access to generous and well-informed people,
from all over the world. These IE tips are courtesy of Stone Free:]
Subscribing to
[In General]
With "MS Internet News", the following 5 steps ("a" thru "e") are needed to set-up ANY newsgroup "Server". You will use all of these steps for each of the newgroups you're going to set-up.
If you have one or more of these servers/newsgroups already set-up, this may be a good time to copy down all the settings for each one - or just print this posting.
These Are the First 5 Steps Required To Set Up Each Newsgroup's "Server"
a) Launch "Internet News" (unless it's already running).
b) Click on "News" (on the titlebar).
c) Click on "Options"
d) Click on the "Server" tab.
e) Click on the "Add" button.

Free and Public News Servers |
|
|
There are lots of news services you can get if you want to PAY for them, and other (more limited and censored collections) usually come with your ISP.
But why pay when there are Free and Public News Servers covering everything you could possibly image, and then some?
Here, try these (using the methods above to Add their server).
The 86 servers listed here are copied from a collection by Kjetil Manheim in Oslo:
http://login.eunet.no/~kjetilm/news.htm
and according to the author, were last updated 16 August 1997.
It's still worth a trip to Kjetil's site, both for it's own worth, and because there are also links from that page alone, to another nine sites full of public news server links and helpful advice ;)
Try the front door at:
http://login.eunet.no/~kjetilm/index.html
It's no accident that this guy has over 73,000 hits!
