Soccer is the world's most popular team sport.
Soccer was mostly played by Europeans and Latin Americans when it first
started. The World Cup is played every year and is held mostly in
Europe. Modern soccer was developed in England during the 1800s,
however, it wasn't very popular in the United States and Canada until the
early 1900s.
The Ancient Greeks and Romans played a type of soccer
where the ball was made of a pig bladder or maybe even the skull of an
enemy soldier.
The first World Cup was played in 1930 in Uruguay
because they were celebrating 100 years of independence. The
first World Cup of soccer only had 13 teams because the boat ride across
the Atlantic Ocean took 3 weeks. The United States was one of these
first teams. Every team that applied got to play for that World Cup.
Now, if a country wants to be part of the World Cup they have to play many
teams to qualify for a place.
You can start playing league soccer when you are
5 years old and there are leagues for people as old as 50. Kids who
play socccer in Victoria and are 12-18 play for the District Cup.
There is a BC Championship tournament where the best teams play in their
age groups.
