Amulet, talisman and oracle -
Betwixt the sun and moon a mystery."

Who is The Goddess?

She is the feminine aspect of deity, equal in power and sacredness as Her masculine counterpart. She is Mother of the Universe, the Earth, and Her consort The God. The Goddess is known my a million names and faces but all Goddesses are one Goddess just as all Gods are one God. Most people think of the God as the Christian God and in Christianity there is no Goddess. Although we Pagans can tell you She lives on as Mary in the hearts of many people!

How does one find or get to know the Goddess?

First, always remember that She is everywhere! She is in all things and she is in you. Woman was made is Her image. There is nothing about you that is not sacred and completely good. But if you want to get to know the Goddess better its easiest to take a look at how She reveals herself . Like the God they both permeate all things. But each governs over more specific areas and aspects. There are many things that are sacred to the Goddess and that is a good place to find her....

In Nature:
She is the Earth itself, offering Her body as our home, our shelter, and our nourishment. Through Her womb all things are born and into Her arms all things return when they “die”. She is the ruler of water: the vast oceans, flowing rivers, and misty swamps. As the Moon She lights our path in the deepest darkest night and by her cycles we count our days.

In Art, Symbol, and Icon:
People have worshiped the Goddess for longer than we can know. We have proof of this through artifacts. Many fertility figures made of clay, stone, wood have been found all over this Earth; sacred mounds (human built) and wells of Ireland and the UK; hieroglyphs/ petraglyphs of Egypt and South America; statues, vessels, jewelry, and other forms of art depicting the Goddess- common in Greko-Roman times, Asia, and many other regions.

In Fairytales, stories, and folklore:
Think of your childhood, of common things: Fairy Princesses and Queens, mermaids, Muses, elves, sprites, nymphs, and the tooth fairy. Vampires, “good” and “bad” witches. Wedding rites and bridal traditions. Many common fairytales are altered stories of the Goddess. These are all areas where the Goddess has lived on perhaps in a diluted or misunderstood way.

In Mythology, History, and Religion:
This is an area where we have had to search, educate, rewrite, and sometimes just go on intuition. In textbooks and religious writings the Gods of the world have dominated just as the men have. In the west the Goddess has endured Sainthood and masculinization- sometimes both. We are mostly raised thinking of the Goddess as “some mythological God’s wife or mother or sister...” and these are mostly Greek/ Roman soap operas we read about in school. We are not told if we dig deeper there is a rich history that reveals not only a bigger picture of the Goddess spirituality but of our world’s history itself. When you look deeper you begin to see just how important the Goddess and women were to humanity.

But if you look in the hearts of the people and at their common alters you will find the Goddess. Throughout the world she is loved as Mary, Kwan Yin, Kali, Bridget, and Aphrodite....or simply just as the Earth we live on.
