Overview of the Weyr
River Cliffs Weyr is located in an eroded caldera at the
end of a winding box canyon. The Weyr Bowl is bisected by
a volcanic hot springs fed stream- the source of which is
located in a cavern at the far end of the canyon. This same
geothermal energy source is used to heat the Hatching
Grounds' Sands, and it provides heat and hot water to the
Weyr.
The walls of the caldera are pot-marked with some 250 cavern
entrances suitable for use as weyrs, but only about a third
of them are currently habitable. Several additional weyrs,
with larger living quarters, line the walls of the canyon
leading up to the caldera. These are used mainly for
quarantined riders, and for those with families- typically
a rider weyrmated to a non-rider. However, any rider may
request one of these larger weyrs.
Additional caverns within the caldera serve as runner stables,
herdbeast pens, candidate and weyrling barracks, the dining
cavern, the Infirmary, and the Hatch Grounds. Crafter caverns
or cot holds are scattered throughout the caldera and canyon.
The weyrs
The typical weyr consists of a dragonweyr- the size of which
depends on the space available, and the color of the dragon
it's meant to house. The dragonweyr contains a stone sleeping
couch for the dragon, pegs for storing riding straps, and
storage space for oil and other supplies.
A tunnel, opening off of one of walls, leads to an exterior
dragonledge that can normally accommodate two dragons. A
living cavern opens off of the dragonweyr in one of the three
remaining directions. The basic furnishings of the weyr
consist of a cot, dresser, table, two chairs, and a storage
cupboard. Any additional furnishings that are needed can be
requisitioned from the Headwoman.
