Apex International Hotel

Venue __#__ (To Be Determined by the Fringe Office in April)

The Apex International Hotel, situated right below the Castle in the heart of the Old Town in the busy and historic Grassmarket, is a 4 star hotel.  This hotel also has several restaurants and bars that overlook the Castle where audience members can go before or after a show.

Apex Hotels' contemporary design are ideally suited as a venue, because they can be defined as Scotland's first 'art hotels.'  The management of this new and developing hotel group, which has come into being in Scotland, have the very clear vision of a hotel group with a difference, committed to the patronage of contemporary art and theatre.  Throughout the hotel, including in the rooms themselves, they plan to feature the history of the Edinburgh Festival and the Fringe by displaying portions of the Demarco Archives.  With the aid of the Apex Hotels, the Demarco European Arts Foundation, and BlinkRed (visual arts), we hope to convert these two new spaces into an exciting and busy venue.

This hotel will provide us with 4 new spaces. The Flodden Suite, the largest of the spaces can seat from 150 to 200 with a thrust style stage measuring 7.8 metres (26') wide and 5.5 metres (18') deep, or up to 8 metres (27') deep (with closer to 150 capacity).  The other three spaces are small intimate spaces, ideally for 1-4 actor shows (depending on degree of action).  The Greyfriars Studio seats about 40 people and has a thrust style stage 4 metres (13'3") wide, and 2.6 metres (8'9") deep.  The Candlemaker Studio is a small proscenium ("Front On") style theatre seating about 30 people, while Grassmarket Studio is a flexible space (thrust, proscenium, in-the-round, etc.) seating 25-40 depending on your configuration.

Another addition we are working on is an Actors Club: a private space for actors in Rocket Venues to relax and meet each other, get a drink, get on-line, copy a review, or send a fax.  This Actor's Club will be located in this hotel.
