Royal Order of Chivalry The guilds were formally recognized professions in Europe during the Middle Ages. Charters were issued to them, giving them the right to establish quality guidelines for their craft and for the training of new craftsmen. Many guilds are very ancient. The Tailors and Courtiers were issued charter in 1152. Guilds within the ROC fall into one of two categories Artisans Guilds or Scholarly Guilds. The Artisans Guilds specialize in crafts, Example; Tailors, Carpenters, Masons, etc… Scholars Guilds specialize in academics, Example; Heralds, Clerks, Finance, Combat (Knighthood) etc… Guilds function as an institution within the ROC that specializes in the historical research and production of medieval goods and practices. One of the primary functions of the Guilds is to promote medieval authenticity in each household. For example; the Tailors Guild is charged with the task of helping and educating others in their household or fiefdom to dress more authentically. Each Guild will have a syllabus to explain to each Guild member the basic understanding of what the Guild is about and what is expected. Each Guild should have its own rank structure with one person in charge of each Guild. Each Guild is sponsored by a Household and is accountable to the head of that household. Below is a list of officially recognized Guilds within the ROC.
