Bulkhead - Transformers; Energon, Hasbro
Meat and Potatoes; 5.0
Perks; 5.0
Homer Facor; 5.0
Description; Airwolf meets the Transfomers!

Bulkhead is an attack chopper with a drone that can be used in chopper and 'bot mode.  The chopper is shaped like a MI-24 Hind.   The drone is a smaller cousin of ED-209 from 'RoboCop'.

The 'bot mode is approximately 8" tall, while chopper mode is about 11" from nose to tail.  The fusilage is dark green and beige, with high-lights in light green and orange.  The weapons drone is light blue in color with black and green high-lights.

Both pieces can be merged in either attack mode (chopper and drone) or armored mode.(robot and drone)
What is it with helicopters and Transformers?  You get big bad looking ones like Starscream and Jetfire if you're a fighter plane.  But what if you're a chopper?  Eek!  You get to be called 'Whirl' and a powder blue, lightly armed version of an Apache!  Hey people choppers kick SERIOUS butt!  The Cobra, the Apache!  And don't forget 'Blue Thunder' and 'Airwolf'!   Granted, Obsidian and Cyclonus were ok, but there wasn't any really big, massive, 'oh yeah, this will leave a mark' kind of chopper out there.

After years and years of neglect,
word started to pop out of a new Transformers chopper designed to kick serious 'Con tail!  After months of waiting, the figure's FINALLY out... and the demand is out-pacing the supply of the newest member of the Autobots.  Doh!  So is it worth the hype?  Can chopper fans finally cheer?  Will I stop whining about no helicopters being cool Transformers?  Folks, we have a winna!

Meat and potatoes are a LOT better then expected on this one.  Usually chopper transformations get kinda frail because you're trying to get the tail get out of the way, you have to do something about the rotors, it just turns into quite a mess.  We've been spare on this one.  Everything folds up well so you end up with a very stable and articulated robot.  Naturally, the sculpting on this figure is outstanding; lots of panel lines, vents, and the other usual stuff.  Sweet!

The weapons drone that comes with Bulkhead is also well done.  The piece looks a LOT like the ED-209 from 'RoboCop'; guns in front, chicken-legs for walking.  The legs fold very well into two pop-up panels for sleek transformation into attack mode... oops, getting ahead of myself.  Bwahahahahahahahahahhahaha!

The only problem with this piece is the colors on it.  Bulkhead itself isn't too bad; basic army colors.  But the drone... for some odd reason, it's colored this bright blue.  There's probably some snazzy name for it, but let's just say bright blue.  I realize this isn't supposed to be all military proper and everything, but this shade of blue looks like something out of the Power Rangers!  Eeek!

Ah, the perks.  THIS is where things get very fun.  Ok, the basic transformation is Bulkhead from 'bot to chopper form.  Cool, SEEMS complicated on the instructions but once you get the hang of it it's not too bad.  A nice thing about the 'bot mode is the entire main rotor assembly pops out and becomes a neat hand-weapon for Bulkhead.

The attack mode is pretty obvious; you take the drone, fold the legs, and attach the drone to Bulkhead.  The other mode, the 'armored' mode consists of unfolding the drone's legs so they become massive artillery cannons.  Attach the drone to Bulkhead's back like a massive backpack and you're good to go.  The drone's cannons can also be pointed down to add even more firepower.   Is this a bit back and top-heavy?  Yes.  Fortunately the drone's legs can be folded down for additional support if you want to display this figure in it's attack mode.  Oh, one tiny problem here; getting the rotor back INTO the 'bot can be a bit tricky, but it's doable.

Homer factor?  Oh come now, I'm a Transformers geek, and a chopper geek!  I've been drooling for the last week waiting for this piece to be delivered to my door!

And I was NOT disappointed!  This is a great piece of work from Hasbro; a lot of different transformations and modes, all of them very cool but not too hard to do.  So get this while the getting is good.  One piece of good news; this piece is being re-released as a re-painted version called Quick Strike, and should be out VERY soon and easier to find!   Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
