Dr. Strange - Marvel Legends Series 9, ToyBiz Meat and Potatoes; 5.0 Perks; 4.5 Homer Facor; 4.7 |
||||||||
Description; the Master of the Mystics Arts gets the ML treatment! Dr. Strange is approximately 6" tall and is in his traditional blue tunit, black hose, and wearing his massive, scarlet Cloak of Levitation. The articulation on the pice is awesome, as always. The figure's cape is removable, and also comes with a limb to create Galactus. |

Ok, so he has the loudest costume since Jericho from the Teen Titans. (Mr. George Perez, you're an incredible penciler, but lordy, the costume you designed for Jericho made my eyes hurt!) So his rogue's gallery is composed of a guy with Don King hair riding a horse and Ghost Rider's lame twin brother. (Alright, so technically Nightmare and Dormamu are more intimidating then that, but they aren't exactly like Venom and The Joker, either.) Still, Dr. Strange has always been a fun character; Wong always being the fun, sage assistant (Think Alfred accept Chinese), the dimension-bending Steve Ditko art which was then replaced by the ghostly pencils of Gene Colan, and those cool spells! The Crimson Bands of Cytorack, the Demons of Denak! Fun, super-natural stuff. Years ago, ToyBiz did an outstanding figure of the Master of the Mystic Arts for the Spider-Man line. But that was ages ago, and it seemed like the good Doctor faded into the background of Marvel's characters... until Marvel Legends got a whiff of the guy. So what could ML possibly do? Quite a bit, actually... Meat and potatoes are the usual, amazing, outstanding work from ToyBiz. The combination of super-detailed sculpting, awesome articulation, and gorgeous painting makes this figure almost a work of art. And this time, the finger articulation makes sense! Doc Strange fans know how he does that funky little finger-sign thingy when he's casting spells. Well, with the finger articulation, he can do that with ease! Sweet! The only minor gripe I have is the Doc's legs SEEM a little spindly for me. They aren't THAT small, but juuuuuuuust a little. Hey it might just be me. The perks... well, this is up for debate. Yes, you get one part of the amazing 16" Galactus that will tower over all of your other figures, blah, blah, blah. And the piece I got was pretty impressive in terms of size and the articulation, et al. However, at the risk of sounding like a heathen... I really don't care if I get to make Galactus or not. Yes, he's a great villain, but enough to spend about $90 on a bunch of figures, most of whom I don't want? Sorry, I am not playing this game. Yes, it makes sense from a marketing stand-point to have a chance to get a 'free' figure, but it doesn't quite play for me. Ok, enough griping like a grumpy old man. The OTHER perk is nicely done; the Doc's Cloak of Levitation. Like the figure, this piece is very well sculpted and painted. A nice touch is the cape is made of flexible plastic, so it billows and drapes nicely. And the cape is removable. Woohoo! Permanently attached to the cape at the Doc's neck is his powerful Eye of Agamotto. I just wish the amulet was also sculpted to the Doc's neck so that when you remove the cape, he's still wearing the amulet, just as he does in the comic. Sigh. Homer factor? Oh, big for me. One of my favorite comics when I was a kid was a paperback sized compilation of Doctor Strange's adventures, from his origin up to his getting his Cloak of Levitation. Stan Lee created an amazing world of ghosts, demons, and monsters, and Steve Ditko's pencils brought this world to life. Even Stephen King would be impressed by the alien landscapes. Seeing the Doc brought back a lot of nice memories. No, he's not a heavy hitter like Iron Man or Thor, but he's still a fun character. All in all, this is a butt-kicking piece to have. Granted, having a giant piece of Galactus replace the usual accessory is kinda annoying, but all-in-all the figure still kicks serious butt. Unfortunately, this does beg a question.... so when is Dormamu or Baron Mordo coming out? We shall wait and see. Bwahahahahahhaahhahahaha! |
