The Ultimate Combiner! Oh, this is a loaded gun here. So many combiners to get ideas from, and it's not limited to the Transformers. There's a ton o' possibilities from the Power Rangers, the Brave Series, oh it just goes on and on. However, Takara and Co. are at the head of the class. Why? The combination of sculpting and articulation from 'Beast Wars' onward were very impressive pieces. But you can always make things better... stronger... faster... So what would THE combiner be like? Time for a 'Queer Eye' meets 'Toyfare' make-over! Well, let's start with the form this should be; planes, cars, animals, whatever. Let's stay away from the obvious ones, like those, and go with a form like Computron and the Technobots; all different types of craft, keep 'em futuristic looking so you don't have to worry about form and function. I prefer five member combiners; one big one for the torso, the other four are the limbs. This maximizes the number of 'bots/vehicles involved in the combination. Naturally, each one of the individual components have to transform into a smaller robot. The great thing about most Transformer combiners is you have the little dudes, who each merge into the giant robot, but they also become tiny robots as well. Nice touch. However, let's snag a trick from Tidal Wave from 'Transformers - Armada' and have the merged vehicles become not just the giant robot, but also a giant vehicle. Ok, we're cooking now! Next, articulation. Oh, this is a must. One of the problem with gestalts is because there are a multitude of pieces being crammed together, the only thing that moves is the shoulders. Ick, ick, ick. Fortunately, there are examples of solid articulation with mergers, such as Voltron/Go Lion! The shoulders, hips, and even elbows moved on this piece. No, we're not looking for Marvel Legends type flexibility, but let's get some good fighting poses here. What else can we do to this giant honking 'bot? One of the great touches from Bandai's Power Rangers mergers, and something 'Armada' and 'Energon' are doing, is merging more and more and MORE robots to create... well, MASSIVE 'bots. Case in point is the biiiiiiiiiig Ultra Megazord from the first Power Rangers line. Let's go with the Ultra Megazord design; add a giant booster to strap on to the base merging 'bot. Then we'll have another 'carrier' vehicle that can also attach more weapons to the merging 'bot, and act as a 'chariot' for the new, reeeeeeeeeeeeeal big 'bot. And we must not forget weapons! One of the great things with Bandai Chogokins, like Daltanius, is the plethora o' extra weapons the 'bots came with. So our new mega-combiner will have a biiiiiig sword, a biiiiiiig gun... oh heck, let's give the biiiiiig bot an entire armory of things to fight with! Naturally each individual vehicle must also have their own individual weapons to smack the bad-guys with. So there you go, THE combiner to take on all challengers! Hey Devastator, eat this! |
