Olympic Monuments The glory of the Olympic champions was imortalised thro ughout Hellas. Monuments
were erected to greet these athletes. Poetry and songs were written about them and coins
minted in their honour. Some of these have also been reflected in Philately. One of the
first polygraphic reproductions on a Greek stamp was the bronze statue of an young Olympic
champion. It was found in the sea near Marathon in 1925. This stamp is now a rare item as
Greece had undergone a major political change at the time of its issue. However, this
marathon boy appeared on Greek stamps several times. The pictures show here the 1950, 1972
and 1975 Greek issues.
