Olympic Stadium
Shortly
before the 22nd Olympic Games at Moscow in 1980, Greece issued five stamps representing
the five ancient
Greek stadia aimed at acquainting collectors and the public in general
about the sites where the institution of the Olympic Games took birth, matured and
functioned in its authentic form. As we can see on the stamp the track is surrounded by
massive sloping embankments of earth for the accommodation of the wpectators. in the
ancient Olympic stadium there were no stone seats in the stadium except for a box on the
south side where the Chief Judgeds of the Games sat. This 4th century stadium has been
fully excavated and its track and embankments restored so that it may be seen in its full
splendour.
