August 16, Clarendon Shelter - mile 1664.9

Tonight I feel more tired, sore & worn out then I have since I first started this trip. I can't believe how many places hurt, as I try to get used to my new gear! I actually wanted to call it a day after only 3 miles this morning because the pack rubbed everything raw. However, with a little creativity & persistence, I found a way to carry it so that it didn't hurt nearly so much.

Well, I must confess to slothfulness last night. All my good intentions of watching the Persidies flew right out the window when I emerged for a 2 AM potty break & decided I was far too cold & tired to sit on a rock in the stream & star-gaze. Tonight, of course, we're expecting rain again so I'm out of luck AGAIN. I wish I had stuck with the plan last night , but oh well.

Speaking of abandoning plans, I must be the queen of "I didn't plan to come this far: I wish that I had stayed at the last shelter, four miles back, because the climb to get here tonight really pushed me too far. The reason I went on was (again) a large group of boy scouts overtaking the shelter area, though to give them credit, they were only tenting & kept all their gear out of the shelter. I enjoyed talking to some of them while I re-filled my water bag, & in retrospect, they probably would have shared their dinner had I stayed.

However, in defense of my sanity, I have also decided that making today longer & tomorrow shorter is likely going to end up being a good idea. We have Killington Peak to climb tomorrow (4 or 5 miles uphill) & it's supposed to rain all day, so it's good that I have fewer miles to do.
