August 17, Pico Camp - mile 1677.6
![]()
I read in a register today that we now have fewer than 500 miles left to Katahdin - WOW! I want so much to savor these last few weeks, and at the same time, I can't wait to reach the goal and be able to go home and see Tony full time again.
True to the forecast, rain arrived around 4AM today and continued til about 2 PM. Being wet to the core again reminded me of those days back in Virginia when I was hiking with Max. Looking back on it, I'm really glad that it was those 2 1/2 weeks of rain that we hiked together, because it really helped to keep my spirits up! Now I just follow her in the registers; in fact, today she had one saying "remember the last time we watched meteors together?" That was back in the Smokies, where I was the only one who saw any.
It seems I will have this lovely little cabin all to myself tonight, so I'm trying to pretend that Tony is here with me to keep me company. I'm very close to the Inn at Long Trail. where nearly everyone I know has headed for the night, particularly since they have a famous pub. But since I don't drink beer and since I spent two nights in the last town, I'm trying to save some $ and stay out here instead. The thought of a hot shower and soft bed is certainly tempting but since this is actually an enclosed cabin, I figure I'll be pretty comfortable here, too. And if the weather continuous to clear, I may get another chance to see the Perseids - this time from inside, since I can merely look out the windows and watch!
